Box Score ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – A golden goal in the first overtime period by Emilia Jonsson sent the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team past Northwood (Fla.) 2-1 and into the NAIA National Championship match on Saturday.
The title game will feature the sixth-seeded Blue Raiders and the fifth-seeded Racers of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
After the first 90 minutes of play saw the score tied at 1-1, Lindsey Wilson (17-3-3) struck quickly in the first overtime period to seal their spot in the title game.
Amanda Kander received a pass as she raced down the left-hand side. She dribbled towards the goal and took a shot that Northwood goalkeeper Matilda Hjalte saved to her left. The ball rebounded to the right of the goal where Jonsson was charging in. Jonsson fired a ball that went through a Northwood defender's legs and snuck just under the crossbar to send the Blue Raiders to the national championship game.
The golden goal came in a game where Lindsey Wilson found itself in an unfamiliar spot, trailing for the first time in the national championship tournament.
In the fourth minute, Northwood (17-6-2) played a ball forward off a free kick to Johanna Engberg, who split a pair of Blue Raider defenders and was able to stay onside before quickly releasing a shot past Johanna Henriksson charging out from goal for the early 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks applied intense pressure in the early goings to the Blue Raider back defensive line, the first such opponent to do so in four national championship matches this season.
About 20 minutes into the game, Lindsey Wilson began settling in and controlling possession, pushing the offensive attack forward.
The Blue Raiders started testing the Northwood defensive unit taking three shots, two on target, before finally breaking through in the 39th minute.
Ayaki Shinada sent in a corner kick from the right side right on top of the goalkeeper's line. The ball sailed just over Hjalte's fingertips where Katarina Simic came charging in and crashed into a pair of Seahawk defenders, but not before heading the ball down and into the goal for the equalizer.
Lindsey Wilson then railed off three shots on goal in a 1:37 span during the final minutes of the half.
The 41st minute saw Shinada thread a through ball to Anna Vig, but the goalkeeper left her line and made a sliding save to keep the Blue Raiders from pulling ahead.
A short time later, Michela Bengtsson dribbled a ball up from her defensive position and unleashed a shot from 25 yards out that Hjalte had to leap to her left to save.
Thirty seconds later, Jonsson took a shot from 20 yards out that forced another save by Hjalte.
As the halftime whistle blew, Lindsey Wilson had recorded eight shots, six on target, compared to just one by the Seahawks, the fourth minute score.
As the second half began, a 58th minute free kick taken by Northwood's Amy Vaughan from 25 yards out forced Henriksson to leave her line and punch the ball away for her second save of the game.
The Seahawks got another scoring chance in the 70th minute when a cross bounced to an open Erin Wells, but she fired high over the crossbar from inside the 18-yard box.
Both squads sent crosses and free kicks forward but neither was able to develop a decent scoring chance.
Shinada did have a shot in the 77th minute after a give-and-go with Elizabet Madjarac, but her shot was saved by Hjalte as the two collided in the six-yard box.
In the 80th minute, Madjarac crossed in a ball that Simic met with a header, forcing a diving save by Hjalte to keep it 1-1.
The 82nd minute saw Northwood nearly take the lead after a short goal kick allowed Engberg to steal the ball and take a quick shot, but it went straight at Henriksson for the save.
Lindsey Wilson came within inches of taking the lead in the 85th minute.
Lyana Perez took a shot from the right that was saved and rebounded just out to the six-yard box. Vig and a defender collided and went down together, neither being able to reach the ball. Kander then found the loose ball and took a shot that hit the left post. The ball rolled behind Hjalte who had dived on the ground in an attempt to save, and sat inches in front of the goal line before a Northwood defender cleared the ball away.
Neither team got much of scoring chance in the final five minutes as the game went into overtime.
Just over three minutes into the overtime period Jonsson was able to find the golden goal on a rebound and send the Blue Raiders on to the title game.
Lindsey Wilson outshot the Seahawks 18-4 with a 12-3 shot on goal advantage on the night. Henriksson made a pair of saves in the win while Hjalte recorded 10 saves while allowing both goals.
The Blue Raiders now face Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in the 2014 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship game.
