Fabulous Fourth: Women's Soccer captures fourth NAIA National Championship with 3-0 win over Northwestern Ohio

Box Score

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Lindsey Wilson women's soccer captured the program's fourth national title tonight with a 3-0 win over Northwestern Ohio in the NAIA National Championships at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

The tournament's most outstanding offensive player Ayaki Shinada scored in the 44th minute and Anna Vig -- the national tournament's most valuable player -- added two second-half goals to propel the No. 3-ranked Blue Raiders to the win.

Lindsey Wilson (18-3-3) also won the national title in 2004, 2006 and 2012.

Following a defensive slugfest in the first 43 minutes, Shinada delivered perhaps the biggest strike of the game just before halftime. Shinada hit a curler into the right side of the goal from 25 yards straightaway past Northwestern Ohio goalkeeper Nadine Stonjek.

The goal was Shinada's fourth of the tournament and gave the Blue Raiders the all-important 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Prior to the goal, Lindsey Wilson and the Racers managed a combine five shots over the first 40-plus minutes of the game.

After the half, it was all Lindsey Wilson.

Anna Vig scored her third goal of the tournament in the 64th minute off Fabienne Rochaix's assist for the 2-0 lead. Vig took the pass to the left side of the penalty box and hooked the shot perfectly over Stonjek's outstretched hands and into the side netting for the two-goal lead.

A little more than three minutes later, Vig scored her second goal of the game with an unassisted score in the 67th minute. Vig dribbled a takeaway into the 18-yard box and sent a low ball to the far post for her fourth goal of the tournament.

The Blue Raider defense put forth another phenomenal performance, limiting the Racers to just a single shot during the match.

Lindsey Wilson capped the national championship game with a 12-1 shot advantage, including 6-0 in shots on goal.

Lindsey Wilson finishes its season winning its last 10 matches. No. 8-ranked Northwestern Ohio ends its season at 22-2-1.

Vig, Shinada, Bettina Brulhart, Elizabet Madjarac and Carola Schneider all were named to the all-tournament team.
