No. 10 Softball powers past William Penn in the 2014 NAIA Opening Round

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The second-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team used two grand slams to defeat third-seeded William Penn (Iowa) University 14-0 in five innings in game one of the Lindsey Wilson Bracket of the 2014 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.

Lindsey Wilson (46-9) found success early as they quickly took a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Abbi Goedde was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Travatia Bowden followed with single through the hole at shortstop. Jordan Hood scored both runners with a two-RBI double to deep right field to make it 2-0.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Amanda Trampe hit the first of two Lindsey Wilson grand slams to give the Blue Raiders a 6-0 lead.

Hood set the Statesmen (36-19) down in order in the bottom of the second inning. In the third inning, Hood put runners on first and second with two outs, but she was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to second to preserve the 6-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Blue Raiders added four more runs with a Bowden grand slam to center field to give Lindsey Wilson a 10-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders scored four runs in the top of the fifth after a leadoff walk to Brittney Graves. Graves moved over to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Graves scored on a Madison Scott single to right to give Lindsey Wilson an 11-0 lead. Krupinski made it 12-0 on an RBI double followed by two sacrifice flies that scored Scott and Bailey Mize to give the Blue Raiders a 14-0 lead.

Hood continued to deal as she recorded a pair of ground outs and a strike out in the bottom of the fifth to end the game and advance the Blue Raiders to the winners bracket on Tuesday.

Hood (22-2) pitched a complete-game shutout allowing four hits and four strikeouts to pick up her 22nd win of the year. Trampe finished the game 1-for-1 with a grand slam, five RBIs, two walks, two runs scored and a sac fly. Bowden went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, four RBIs and two runs scored. Hood finished the game with a double and two RBIs.

Jennifer Whitehead (26-9) went three and two thirds innings while allowing seven hits, 10 earned runs, seven strikeouts and five walks in the loss. Malloree Grove went 2-for-3 while Jorden Steele went 1-for-2.

Lindsey Wilson advances to the winner's bracket on Tuesday, May 13 at 11 a.m. CT and faces top-seed Saint Xavier (Ill.). William Penn moves to the elimination bracket and plays Cornerstone (Mich.) University at 1:30 p.m. CT.
