Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – A corner kick, free kick, and a powerful shot by Emilia Jonsson helped lift the top-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
Dealing with light yet continuous rain showers throughout the match, the Blue Raiders remained unbeaten on the year at 7-0-2 with a 3-0-0 record in the Mid-South Conference with the win, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-7-0 and 1-2-0 in the MSC with the loss.
The game began with both teams making driving runs into their opponent's final third, but those runs often stalled and few scoring chances were created throughout the opening 20 minutes.
That all changed in a matter of four minutes when three goals were put into the back of the net beginning in the 22nd minute.
Emma Skaremo sent a corner kick deep into the six-yard box where Lyana Perez had evaded her defender and met the ball with a header, directing it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Skaremo has now recorded an assist in four-straight games and leads the team with eight total.
Cumberland responded immediately by scoring on a corner kick of their own in the 24th minute. The corner was sent into the middle of the six-yard box where it ricocheted and fell right at the feet of Cumberland's Emily Shires, who punched it past Johanna Henriksson in goal for the equalizer.
Lindsey Wilson quickly retook the lead less than 90 seconds later.
Perez took the ball down the right flank and passed it back into the middle where a Blue Raider and Bulldog player tackled each other both attempting to make a play on the ball in the box. The ball then rolled away from the goal right to Jonsson, who ran to the ball and hit it first time, unleashing a thundering drive that soared towards the goal, hitting just inside the far post and into the back of the net to put the Blue Raiders back on top 2-1.
Lindsey Wilson continued to dictate play for the remainder of the first half, taking their 2-1 lead into the break.
Lindsey Wilson had six shots, four on target with five corner kicks in the opening half compared to five shots, two on target and one corner kick by the Bulldogs.
The second half saw the Blue Raiders pick up where they left off in the first, holding the majority of the possession and controlling play in the early goings.
Lindsey Wilson was able to extend their lead to 3-1 in the 53rd minute thanks to Yvonne Ploeg.
After a foul awarded the Blue Raiders a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box, Ploeg stepped up and confidently hit a shot that curled around the defensive wall and into the back of the net, past the outstretched hands of the diving Bulldog keeper to make it 3-1.
Cumberland nearly got one back in the 59th minute on a set-piece free kick, but after Henriksson made the initial save on a header, she got help from her defensive back line to clear a loose ball in the box to preserve the 3-1 lead.
As the Bulldogs felt time ticking away, they began unleashing shots from distance, but most of them they were either off the mark or easily collected by Henriksson in goal.
Cumberland continued to press the issue late, but the strength of the Blue Raider midfielders and back line along with Henriksson refused to budge as Lindsey Wilson completed the 3-1 win.
Lindsey Wilson finished with 11 shots, six on target, while the Bulldogs took 14 shots, seven on target. Both teams had six corner kicks and Henriksson made a game-high six saves.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Oct. 7 when they host St. Catharine (Ky.) at 5 p.m. CT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
