Men's Swimming takes third, Women's Swimming finishes fifth at Brenau Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Lindsey Wilson men's swim team finished in third place while the women's swim team recorded a fifth-place finish on the final day of the Brenau Invitational on Saturday held at the Francis Meadows Aquatic Center.

The Blue Raider swim teams more than held their own in the competition that consisted of 14 men's teams and 15 women's teams for a total of 330 swimmers. Along the way, a total of nine school records were broken, including eight by the men's team.

The Lindsey Wilson men's team racked up 452 total team points, falling just 53 points behind SCAD Savannah (Ga.) in second place, while the women's team accumulated 279 points, sitting 26.5 points behind fourth-place Columbia (Mo.).

Four records broken by the men's team came in relay events. They set new program records in the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay, surpassing times that had stood since 2012. The Blue Raider men's relay teams also set new high marks in the 800-yard freestyle relay, beating the old mark by five seconds, and the 200-yard medley relay, setting a new mark by two seconds with a time of 1:34.62.

Clemens Patzold topped a pair of school records in individual events. He finished third in the 200-yard backstroke event and touched the wall in 1:54.00 in the 200-yard individual medley race, beating the previous school record of 1:56.18 to set new high marks for the program, finishing third out of 42 competitors.

Iker Larzabal and Zachary Patzer were the final two Blue Raiders to set individual program records on the day, Larzabal accomplishing it in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.9 to beat out the previous mark of 1:44.18, and Patzer setting his record in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 21.79 after finishing ninth out of 75 swimmers.

Jose Prado de Lima nearly grabbed a school record of his own, but came up just shy in the 100-yard butterfly event.

Ryan Leamy, Gage Setzer and Mark Richard all collected national standards on the day, Leamy grabbing his in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:22.54, and Setzer and Richard both earning theirs with a 'B' standard in the 100-yard butterfly. Setzer would add a second national standard as he collected a national 'A' cut in the 200-yard individual medley race with a 10th-place finish.

Jonas Muller took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 58.42.

On the women's side, Emily Wood set a new program record in the 500-yard freestyle event after touching the wall in 5:17.00, surpassing the previous time of 5:22.30 with a seventh-place finish. She later grabbed a national 'A' standard in the 100-yard breaststroke event with an eighth-place finish.

Courtney Fleeger punched a ticket to nationals after achieving the national standard in the 400-yard individual medley event. Elena Nikolaeva recorded a national 'A' standard of her own in the 200-yard individual medley race, recording a time of 2:16.40 in eighth place out of 51 swimmers. Nikolaeva also captured a sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke event.

Laura Stephenson captured third place in the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 57.56 out of 48, and added a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.06 in the field of 27 racers.

Limestone (S.C.) captured both team titles on the day, the men's team racking up 971 points and the women's team finishing with 901 points at the invitational.

Next up for the Blue Raiders is the final event of the 2015 calendar year as they host Campbellsville (Ky.) in a dual meet on Senior Night on Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. CT.
