Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team scored four first-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Georgetown (Ky.) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday evening at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex.
The Blue Raiders (14-4-1) now face second-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday at 5 p.m. CT in the semifinals. Cumberland defeated seventh-seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) 3-1 in their quarterfinal matchup. In the contest earlier this season between Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland, the Bulldogs defeated the Blue Raiders 2-1 in Lebanon, Tenn.
Lindsey Wilson controlled possession for the majority of the contest and used a clever display of passing to move past the Tigers (5-12).
Moustapha Fofana got the scoring started in the third minute when dribbled down the right flank, sending a low cross into the box. Both Tauan Salgado and Aleksi Pahkasalo attempted to reach back for the pass, but it slipped just past them. But then Roger Rizzi came flying in from the left flank and slotted the ball home in the bottom left corner for the opening goal.
The second scoring sequence began in the 11th minute and was jumpstarted by Yusuf Ackers from his left back position. Ackers sent a long ball forward to Anthony Tshimpi, who cleverly tipped the ball up and over a defender to Pahkasalo in stride towards the goal. Pahkasalo then faked a shot and got the keeper to go to the ground before dribbling around the Tiger keeper and finishing into the open net for the 2-0 lead.
The Tigers nearly cut one back in the 33rd on a great through ball, but Yuta Nomura left his line at the perfect time to block the shot attempt.
The third goal came when Salgado and Serge Gomis played a one-two sequence. Gomis dribbled into the box and played a ball back to Salgado, where he one-touched the ball to free up some space before firing into the bottom right corner for the score.
Pahkasalo scored his second of the game in the 38th minute. Gomis dribbled down into the box all the way from the midfield line. He then dumped a pass towards the six-yard box where Salgado tipped it over to Pahkasalo on the left, who then snuck it into the bottom left corner for the goal.
As the second half began, the Blue Raiders stepped off the gas just a bit but continued to dominate the possession game. Lindsey Wilson's back line continued to keep play in front of them and stifled the Tigers from creating threatening chances.
The final goal on the night came in the 89th minute. Salgado received a pass in the box and fired on goal, but the ball hit the post and bounced back into play where Salgado collected his own rebound and fired it into the back of the net for the final goal.
Lindsey Wilson finished the night outshooting the Tigers 30-8, with a 14-3 shot on goal advantage.
Nomura collected three saves in the win as he picked up his 10th shutout of the year. Georgetown's Patrick Schwarz made eight saves in the loss and allowed all five goals.
Friday's semifinal matchup is set to kick off at 6 p.m. CT against Cumberland.
