Hot shooting, strong defense helps Women's Basketball take down No. 20 Martin Methodist 65-38

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team used a combination of hot shooting, strong rebounding, and a tenacious defensive effort to top No. 20-ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.) 65-38 on Wednesday night at Biggers Sports Center.

With the victory, the Blue Raiders (13-2) have now won seven-straight games this season and snapped the RedHawks' (10-3) 10-game win streak in the process.

The hot shooting took a little bit of time to develop as Lindsey Wilson went 0-for-5 to start the game, but then the Blue Raiders started making shots from all over the floor. By the end of the evening, Lindsey Wilson had poured in 11 makes from beyond the arc, matching a season high.

Kayla Richardson spearheaded the hot shooting from downtown as she made 5-of-6 from deep, one shy of her career high, to finish with a game-high 18 points. Chanel Roberts was the lone other Blue Raider in double figures with 15, but nine of the 10 Blue Raiders that entered the game record at least two points.

The opening quarter was a slow one for both teams as each had struggles making shots from the floor. Lindsey Wilson missed five shots to start the day while Martin Methodist went 1-for-8 to begin the contest. The shooting struggles were due in large part to the tenacious man-to-man defenses that both teams employed, refusing to give up any easy shots in the early goings.

The Blue Raiders finally made a shot from the floor when Richardson hit a three at the 5:17 mark of the first to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 lead. While the shots in the paint failed to fall, the Blue Raiders moved things to beyond the arc where they went 4-for-5 in the opening quarter including hitting back-to-back threes to take a 12-7 lead.

Following a RedHawk basket with under five seconds to go in the quarter, Richardson took the inbounds pass and dribbled twice before tossing up a shot from beyond half court that banked in as the buzzer sounded to give Lindsey Wilson a 15-9 lead.

The two teams continued to battle in the second quarter, but the Blue Raiders slowly began building a lead, pushing it to double digits at 24-14 with less than five minutes to play in the half. The 9-5 run to start the quarter was capped off by Michelle Montgomery hitting a turnaround jumper as the shot clock expired.

Lindsey Wilson continued the intensity on the defensive end of the floor, forcing the RedHawks into six turnovers, while the shots began falling on the offensive end.

Leading 24-14, the Blue Raiders proceeded to close out the quarter on a 13-4 run, including a run of eight-straight points after three pointers by Cameron McPherson and Richardson, and a basket by Roberts put Lindsey Wilson ahead 37-18 at the break. The 19-point advantage was the largest in the half for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson shot 45.2 from the field in the first half including making 8-of-12 shots from beyond the arc. Martin Methodist managed to make just six of their 25 shot attempts (24.0) in the first half and held a 16.7 percent mark from three-point land.

The 18 points allowed by the Blue Raiders in the first half was the lowest first-half total given up to an opponent this season. Martin Methodist scored nine points each in the first and second quarters, marking the third and fourth times this year that the Blue Raiders have held their opponent to single digits in a quarter. Lindsey Wilson previously accomplished the task against Brescia (Ky.) (nine points) and Coastal Georgia (seven points).

The Blue Raiders picked right up where they left off to begin the third quarter, scoring six-straight points to extend their lead to 43-18. Martin Methodist finally put an end to their five-minute scoring drought when Janasia Williams hit a jumper at the 5:30 mark to make it a 45-22 game.

As the game went on, the shooting struggles for the RedHawks continued while the defensive intensity never faltered for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson continued to pressure and force Martin Methodist into turnovers and tough shots. By the end of the quarter, the Blue Raiders had expanded their lead to 28 points at 52-24.

The six points allowed by Lindsey Wilson in the quarter was the lowest point total allowed all season in a single quarter by the Blue Raiders, and the fifth time their opponent was held to single digits.

The fourth quarter saw the same trends continue as the Blue Raiders opened by scoring the first seven points of the frame to take a 59-24 lead.

Martin Methodist finally put together a string of points when they rolled off eight straight to cut the lead to 59-32, but Lindsey Wilson promptly responded with back-to-back threes by Richardson and McPherson to push the lead back to 65-32.

The RedHawks were finally able to get out of double digits in a quarter as they posted 14 in the final frame, but it was Lindsey Wilson's night from the start as they ended with the 65-38 victory.

By night's end, Lindsey Wilson shot 38.3 percent from the field. Martin Methodist finished at 29.2 percent and went 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders dominated on the board as they outrebounded the RedHawks 42-22, including limiting the RedHawks to four offensive rebounds.

Teairra Luckett finished as the top Martin Methodist scorer as she posted eight points.

The Blue Raiders return to action in 2016 when they resume Mid-South Conference play on Jan. 7 with a trip to No. 22 Pikeville (Ky.).
