No. 19 Women's Basketball downs No. 21 Shawnee State, 79-66

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The 19th-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team topped No. 21 Shawnee State (Ohio) by a final of 79-66 on Saturday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center.

In what was both Senior Day as well as the college's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day, five players finished in double figures for the Blue Raiders (21-6, 9-4 Mid-South Conference). The Bears fall to 18-8 and 5-5 in conference play.

With the victory, the Blue Raiders match the program's single-season home wins mark with 13 and head coach John B. Wethington earns his 499th career coaching victory.

Trailing by a 9-2 margin only four minutes into the game, Lindsey Wilson hung tight with Shawnee State and eventually broke through to assume a 27-17 edge with less than three and a half minutes until halftime.

The score was 14-14 following an Ashley McMurtrey basket at the 10:33 mark, but Kasey Young converted back-to-back three-point shots to push the Blue Raiders ahead, 20-14. Consecutive baskets by Courtney Sandlin, and then a three-point shot by Kayla Richardson made it 27-17 with 3:27 remaining in the first half.

The Bears would not go away quietly and went on a 9-2 run to close out the half, cutting the Lindsey Wilson advantage to 29-26.

In the opening half, the Blue Raiders shot 12-of-35 from the floor (34.3 percent), but converted 55.6 percent of their three-point field goals (5-of-9). Shawnee State hit 28.1 percent of its field-goal attempts (9-of-32) and converted 3-of-15 shots from three-point range (20.0 percent).

Sandlin had 10 points in the first half for the Blue Raiders, while McMurtrey scored a dozen points for the Bears.

During the second half, Shawnee State drew as close as a single point within Lindsey Wilson following a three-point shot by Rachael Young that made it a 42-41 game just over 13 minutes left in regulation.

Holding a three-point lead at 48-45 after two-straight free throws by Shavon Robinson, the Blue Raiders burst through with a 10-1 run to stretch their lead to 12 points with less than six minutes to play. Chanel Roberts closed out the run with a basket that put Lindsey Wilson ahead, 58-46, at the 5:55 mark.

From that point forward, the Blue Raiders held no smaller than an eight-point edge for the rest of the game on their way to a 79-66 victory.

Lindsey Wilson ended the day with a 46.7 field-goal percentage (28-of-60), but shot 16-of-25 in the second half alone (64.0 percent). Additionally, the Blue Raiders converted 15-of-20 free-throw attempts (75.0 percent), including 83.3 percent just in the second half (15-of-18).

Lindsey Wilson finished with a 46-to-34 rebounding advantage, and its reserves outscored their Shawnee State counterparts, 48-18.

The Bears converted 35.9 percent of their shots from the field (23-of-64), including a 9-of-31 performance from three-point range (29.0 percent).

For the Blue Raiders, Roberts had her third double-double this season as she led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kasey Young finished with a career-best 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting and hit five-of-eight three-point shots.

Sandlin had a season-high 16 points on the strength of six-of-eight shooting, including two three-point baskets. Alexus Chinn contributed 11 points and six rebounds, and Richardson had 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.

The Bears were led by McMurtrey's 18 points, five assists and three steals. Robinson had a dozen points, three assists and pair of steals, while Rebecca Bruner finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Before the game, seniors Ranika Rone, Keosha Wisener and B.J. Avery were all honored for their contributions to the women's basketball program.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Berea (Ky.) on Tuesday with the game scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. CT start.
