CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Turnovers and offensive rebounds ruined any chances of a Blue Raider upset as No. 19 Lindsey Wilson fell to No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) 62-54 on Thursday night at the Powell Athletic Center.
The Blue Raiders were unable to take advantage of an off-shooting night by the Tigers and ultimately fell by eight points.
Lindsey Wilson committed 21 turnovers and lost the offensive rebounding battle 18-11 as the Blue Raiders fall to 18-6 on the year and 6-4 in Mid-South Conference play. The Tigers improve to 22-1 and hold on to their lead in the Mid-South Conference with a 7-1 record.
Chanel Roberts led the team with 13 points and Courtney Sandlin finished with a career-high 12. Michelle Montgomery came up short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
The game got off to a sporadic start as both teams anxiously hurried up and down the court, neither setting up a true offensive play over the course of the opening three minutes.
Campbellsville used quick passing and offensive rebounding to create opportunities, but the Tigers were unable to capitalize.
Both teams struggled from the field in the early goings, the Blue Raiders hitting just 5-of-18 shots from the floor including 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Tigers shot just 3-of-20 including a 0-for-9 mark from beyond the mark in the opening 11 and a half minutes.
Despite the troublesome shooting, Lindsey Wilson was able to hang on to the lead and build as much as an eight-point advantage at 16-8 with 7:36 to play in the first. But that lead quickly faded as the Tigers scored eight-straight points over the course of two minutes and 15 seconds to tie the game at 16-16.
The 8-0 run was capped off by a three-point basket from Lexxus Graham, the Tigers' first make in 10 tries from beyond the arc.
Lindsey Wilson scored the next five points, but Campbellsville answered by scoring the next eight points, including another three-pointer from Graham with two seconds left on the clock to give the Tigers a 24-21 halftime lead. The make put Campbellsville out front for the first time in the game.
Both teams struggled shooting in the opening half, the Blue Raiders shooting 33.3 percent (9-27) and the Tigers shooting 26.5 percent (9-34). Lindsey Wilson made 2-of-6 shots from three-point range as Campbellsville made 4-of-16 shots from deep.
The Blue Raiders won the overall rebounding advantage 23-21, but the Tigers grabbed 10 offensive rebounds compared to seven by Lindsey Wilson.
Stout defensive efforts by both teams saw Lindsey Wilson turn the ball over 15 times, including seven from Roberts and four by Kayla Richardson. The Blue Raiders did block four shots, three by Alexus Chinn, and record six steals in the opening frame.
Billie Hearn recorded the other block in the first half, her 30th of the season, which put her in a tie for ninth place on the program's all-time blocks list.
The second half saw both teams come out with more controlled possessions than the start of the game.
Lindsey Wilson kept the Tigers within striking distance in the opening minutes, never allowing Campbellsville to build more than a two-point advantage. The Blue Raiders finally retook the lead at the 14:31 mark after a three-point basket by Richardson put Lindsey Wilson up 33-32.
The Tigers began slowly building a lead taking a six-point advantage, the largest of the game, after a three pointer by Emily Fox to take a 50-44 lead. But Sandlin answered with a three of her own to trim it back down to three at 50-47 with 4:55 to play.
With less than four minutes to play, Roberts picked up her fifth and final foul, removing the Blue Raiders' leading scorer from the game.
Lindsey Wilson was able to trim the Tiger lead to three at 54-51 with two and a half minutes to play, but the Blue Raiders were not able to bring it any closer as Campbellsville made their free throws down the stretch.
A pair of desperation three pointers by Lindsey Wilson did not fall as the Blue Raiders ultimately fell 62-54.
Lindsey Wilson finished the night outshooting the Tigers 38.5 percent to 31.1 percent, but Campbellsville committed just 13 turnovers, including only three in the second half.
Emily Fox led the Tigers with 13 points including four three pointers. LeeAnn Grider added 12 points and Lindsey Burd and Chelsea Craig each finished with 10.
