Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team opened their 2015 campaign on Wednesday night against Marygrove (Mich.) with a 2-1 overtime win thanks to a 96th minute golden goal from Aleksi Pahkasalo.
As the game was tied 1-1 after regulation, Pahkasalo netted the game-winner to give the Blue Raiders (1-0) the victory after a late equalizer by the Mustangs (0-1).
Lindsey Wilson got on the board early in the game as Jordan Hall was able to knock in a rebound off of Tauan Salgado's initial shot to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 in the third minute of the game. Lindsey Wilson controlled possession throughout the first half, but they could not get another shot past the Mustang goalkeeper, as the Blue Raiders hung on to a one goal lead at the half.
To start the second half, Marygrove started to balance out the field of play, but neither team could find the back of the net in the early going of the second half.
Lindsey Wilson nearly doubled their lead but a header by Hall in the 67th minute was cleared off the line by a Mustang defender after the goalkeeper deflected the initial shot.
The Mustangs finally got on the board in the 83rd minute to tie the game, 1-1, sending the game into overtime.
Marygrove's Abdoulie Jallow threaded a ball up to Gbenga Ayanwale just outside the penalty box. Ayanwale collected the ball and fired it into the top-right quarter of the net for the equalizer.
The Blue Raiders pressured in the final minutes but were unable to find a late winner.
In the overtime period, Pahkasalo was able to find space just outside of the 18-yard box and he struck the ball into top-right corner of the net to beat the Marygrove keeper and sealed the 2-1 win for the Blue Raiders.
Lindsey Wilson outshot Marygrove 18-7 on the night, including six shots on target compared to just two by the Mustangs.
Lindsey Wilson will hit the road for their next match on Aug. 24 against William Carey (Miss.) in Hattiesburg, Miss., for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
