Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team saw a two-goal halftime lead slip away against No. 14-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) as the teams played to a 2-2 double overtime draw on Monday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The Blue Raiders (1-0-1) built their lead halfway through the opening 45 minutes of play with goals from Emmy Svensson and Lyana Perez.
In the 21st minute, Lindsey Wilson opened up the four-goal affair when Amanda Kander dribbled into the box and dumped a ball to Svensson near the penalty spot. Svennson then coolly finished into the bottom right corner to put the Blue Raiders up 1-0.
Five minutes later, Perez notched her third goal of the season in the 26th minute to double the lead. Perez dribbled down the right side, split a pair of Tiger defenders, got around a third defender, and beat the keeper to the near post to give the Blue Raiders the 2-0 advantage.
That lead would hold until halftime as Lindsey Wilson recorded 14 shots and six corner kicks by the break.
Shortly after halftime, the Tigers (1-0-1) were able to cut the lead in half and find the equalizer in a span of five minutes, using a corner kick and a Blue Raider miscue.
In the 54th minute, Olivet Nazarene's Ellen West sent a corner kick into the box. Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Johanna Henriksson went out to punch the ball away, but was beat to the spot by Betsy Hetrick who headed the ball into the center of the open goal to trim the lead to one.
Moments later, a Blue Raider miscommunication allowed the Tigers to find the tying goal in the 59th minute.
Olivet Nazarene sent a long ball up top where Hetrick was in a foot race with a Blue Raider defender. The defender attempted to box out Hetrick as Henriksson raced out to collect the ball. Henriksson missed and the ball skipped away towards the net where Hetrick picked it up and finished into the open net to tie the game.
For the remainder of regulation, Lindsey Wilson controlled play and sent shot after shot towards goal, but saw the attempts saved by Sarah Vrosh or sail wide. The Blue Raiders had an excellent chance in the 84th minute but Kander's shot was tipped by Vrosh off the crossbar to keep things level.
As the game went into overtime the Blue Raiders were once again the aggressors firing off four shots while holding the Tigers without a single attempt in the extra periods. But Lindsey Wilson was able to put just one of those shots on target as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Blue Raiders finished with a commanding 28-6 shot advantage and an 11-2 corner kick advantage. Vrosh finished with eight saves between the posts while Henriksson made two. Both Kander and Svensson finished with three shots on target.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday night as the Blue Raiders head to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a matchup with No. 9 William Carey.
