Perez hits late winner to boost No. 1 Women's Soccer over No. 2 Northwestern Ohio

COLUMBIA, Ky. – In the NAIA Match of the Week the No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated No. 2 Northwestern Ohio, 1-0, in the final match of the Lindsey Wilson Classic on Saturday night.

Lyana Perez scored the lone-goal in the match, while Johanna Henriksson picked up her third shutout of the season in goal for the Blue Raiders (3-0-2).

In the first half of the match, the Blue Raiders and the Racers (4-1-2) battled back-and-forth, with neither team able to take control of the game in the early going. Both teams had scoring chances in the first half, but Lindsey Wilson and Northwestern Ohio could not capitalize, as the game was tied 0-0 at the end of the first half.

Lindsey Wilson held the advantage in shots on goal in the first half over Northwestern Ohio, 2-1.

The stalemate continued to start the second half as both teams looked for the first goal of the game. In the 70th minute the Blue Raiders finally broke the scoreless tie, as Delfina Santellan fed a through ball that bounced into the box, where Perez was able pick up the pass and blast it past the goalkeeper to the near post to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders looked to find an insurance goal in the final 20 minutes of the game as they put pressure on the Racer net minder, but Lindsey Wilson could not find the back of the net. Northwestern Ohio tried to find the equalizer late in the match as they had four shots in the final seven minutes of the match, but the Racers could not put any on target, as the Blue Raiders held onto a 1-0 victory.

By night's end, Northwestern held the advantage in both total shots (11-6) and corner kicks (9-3), but were able to put just one shot on target.

In the first match of the day on Saturday, Martin Methodist (Tenn.) was able to score two goals in the second half to beat Spring Arbor (Mich.), 2-0.

Lindsey Wilson opens their 2015 Mid-South Conference schedule next week as they host Georgetown (Ky.) next Friday at 5 p.m. CT to start homecoming weekend.
