Ploeg's hat trick helps No. 1 Women's Soccer take down No. 5 Martin Methodist 6-3

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. – The top-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team went on the road on Saturday night and took down No. 5-ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.) by a final score of 6-3 at Grissom Pitch.

The Blue Raiders (6-0-2) remain unbeaten on the year with the win while the RedHawks fall to 5-2-0 with the loss.

What may have been predicted as a low-scoring affair coming into the night with both teams having recorded 10 combined shutouts on the season, turned into a high-scoring shootout with nine total goals scored, including a first-career hat trick by Yvonne Ploeg.

It did not take long for the scoring to get started as just seven minutes in Lindsey Wilson found the back of the net.

Emilia Jonsson passed the ball to Amanda Kander in stride running down the middle near the 18-yard box. Kander proceeded to split the two centerbacks and rip a shot into the left side of the goal past the outstretched hands of the RedHawk keeper to make it 1-0.

Just a few minutes later, the lead was doubled in the 11th by Isobel Dalton.

Ploeg received a pass in the box with her back to the goal. She turned and dribbled down to the end line on the right side before sending a ball back across the face of goal. The ball trickled to Dalton who slotted it home in the bottom-left corner of the net to make it a 2-0 game.

Martin Methodist quickly cut the Blue Raider lead back to one with a goal of their own in the 13th minute. After a pass was sent up to Millene Cabral Vieira, Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Johanna Henriksson rushed off her line in an attempt to meet the ball just outside of the 18-yard box. But Vieira was able to avoid the sliding block attempt and finished into the open net to make it a 2-1 game.

Lindsey Wilson nearly regained the two-goal advantage just minutes later, but Dalton's shot near the penalty spot was saved after splitting a pair of defenders to keep it 2-1.

The Blue Raiders continued to apply pressure and eventually regained the two-goal lead thanks to Ploeg in the 33rd minute.

Kander dribbled the ball down into the box on the left-hand side where she was dispossessed by the RedHawk defenders. Before they could clear the ball, Ploeg swooped in and stole the ball in the six-yard box, turned, and fired into the top-left corner of the net on a tight angle to make it a 3-1 game.

The remainder of the half went quietly as Lindsey Wilson took their 3-1 lead into the break.

The Blue Raiders had unleashed 10 shots in the first half, eight on target, compared to four shots by the RedHawks, all on target.

There was a lull in scoring chances in the early parts of the second half as both defenses tightened up until the RedHawks cut the lead back down to one in the 67th minute. Caroline Ladaga da Silva received a ball 25 yards out and turned around one of the Blue Raider defenders before unleashing a shot from the top of the box that went up and over Henriksson and curled down into the net to make it 3-2.

The contest remained tight for 10 minutes before the Blue Raiders blew things open by scoring three goals in four minutes beginning in the 77th.

Emma Skaremo dribbled down the left flank past her defender before sending a low cross into the middle where Ploeg was all alone in the six-yard box to smash it home and make it 4-2.

In the 78th minute, Sanna Svensson got in on the scoring action after lifting a shot from the top-right corner of the box up and over the RedHawk defense and goalkeeper into the top-left corner of the goal to make it 5-2.

The final Blue Raider score came in the 80th minute when Svensson fired a shot on target that was saved, but the rebound fell right to Ploeg who tapped in the rebound to complete her hat trick.

Martin Methodist added a final goal in the 87th minute on a free kick from 19 yards out, but the Blue Raiders had all but finished off the RedHawks at that point.

By night's end, Lindsey Wilson outshot Martin Methodist 25-7 with an 18-7 shot-on-goal advantage. Henriksson recorded four saves on the night between the posts.

Lindsey Wilson head coach Drew Burwash was happy with Saturday's result, but still feels his side can improve in areas.

"At times we executed on an extremely high level and at other times we lost our focus and gave them opportunities and allowed them to keep the game tight," Burwash said. "We were fortunate to put together some nice combinations and get some good goals, but they kept it close and when you are on the road against a very good top-five team anything can happen."

"We made some difficult shots that are often tougher to make than they are to miss, but we could have done more to create separation in the first 20 minutes of the game," Burwash said.

"Overall it was a good night, but there are still things we need to work on and as coaches we need to do a better job of communicating what is needed in those kind of scenarios."

The Blue Raiders return to the pitch on Sept. 29 as they host Cumberlands (Ky.) for a Mid-South Conference match at 5 p.m. CT.
