Box Score

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – An 82nd minute goal from Lyana Perez proved to be enough for the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team as the Blue Raiders topped No. 9 William Carey (Miss.) 1-0 on Saturday night at Crusader Field.

After a slow opening first half to the contest, the top-ranked Blue Raiders (2-0-1) began applying pressure to the Crusader (3-1-0) defense, slowly but surely putting shots on target. The breakthrough finally came in the 82nd minute when Yvonne Ploeg dished a ball to Perez who finished from inside the six-yard box to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 1-0.

From there, the Lindsey Wilson defense continued to take care of business allowing just two shots in the 88th and 89th minutes, the first shots of the game for the Crusaders. The shot in the 89th minute forced Johanna Henriksson to make her first save in goal on the night as she earned her second shutout of the season.

For Perez, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the year.

The opening 45 minutes of play began with a slow start as the first shot of the game did not occur until the 22nd minute when Perez put her first attempt wide. Lindsey Wilson's best scoring chance of the half came in the 27th minute when Ploeg fired a shot from just outside the six-yard box but it clipped off the post to keep the game scoreless.

The remainder of the half would go by without a shot taken by either team as the squads battled for possession in a defensive struggle. William Carey was hit with four fouls and a yellow card and not a single corner kick was taken in the opening half.

As the second half began, the Blue Raiders turned up the offensive intensity with a string of three shots in an eight minute period, including the first shot on goal on the night by Amanda Kander in the 58th minute.

Another close chance for Lindsey Wilson came in the 74th minute, but once again a Blue Raider shot deflected off the post, this time by Emma Skaremo.

The game seemed destined for overtime when Ploeg and Perez connected in the 82nd minute to give Lindsey Wilson the game-winning goal.

With the win, Lindsey Wilson improves to 2-2 in the all-time series with William Carey in games played in Hattiesburg.

The Blue Raiders finished with eight shots and just two goal while the Crusaders managed just a pair of shots. Only four corner kicks were taken in the game, three by Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders return to the pitch on Friday for the Lindsey Wilson Classic when they host No. 8 Spring Arbor (Mich.).
