Upset bid falls short for No. 22 Women's Basketball as No. 9 Shawnee State wins 73-70

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- In a battle of top-25 teams, the 22nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team fell short of upsetting No. 9 Shawnee State (Ohio) on the road, as the Bears came away with a 73-70 victory.

The Blue Raiders (14-4, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) had three players in double figures as Teanna Curry led the way for Lindsey Wilson with 14 points, while Malerie Martin and Chanel Roberts chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Billie Hearn was two points shy of a double-double as she finished the game with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds against the Bears (16-2, 4-0 MSC).

After the first 2:18 of scoreless play, Shawnee State scored the first six points of the game to take an early 6-0 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter. Lindsey Wilson chipped into the Bears lead as Martin hit a three-pointer to make it an 11-9 game with 3:25 to play in the first quarter.

With Lindsey Wilson trailing 15-13 with 2:20 to play in the first quarter, Shawnee State ended the period on an 8-2 run to hold a 23-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Bears scored the first basket of the second quarter to grab their first double-digit lead of the game at 25-15. The Blue Raiders tried to chip away at the Shawnee State lead, but the Bears continued to cling to their 10-point lead with 5:48 left to play in the first half.

Over the next 4:03, Lindsey Wilson put together a 12-2 run to tie the game, 31-31, with 1:45 to play in the second quarter. After the Bears regained the lead, the Blue Raiders scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 37-33 lead into the half.

Both teams had their shooting touch in first half as Lindsey Wilson shot 53.6 percent from the floor, while Shawnee State was an even 50 percent from the field.

To start the third quarter, Lindsey Wilson maintained a slight advantage, but the Bears continued to keep the game within reach. Shawnee State tied the game, 39-39, at the 8:09 mark of the quarter. The Bears took the lead with 6:43 left in third quarter, and then extended it to as many as three points on two different occasions.

Shawnee State led 46-43, but the Blue Raiders countered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Lindsey Wilson slowly continued to extend their lead to seven points after Heidi Huffman knocked down a shot from behind the arc to give the Blue Raiders a 54-47 edge with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

However, the Bears did not go away quietly as they scored final five points of the third quarter to cut their deficit to 54-52 after the third quarter.

Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth to start the final period of regulation, as Lindsey Wilson once again was able to extend their lead to 62-57 with 6:51 to play. The Bears hung around throughout the final moments of the game as they went on a 10-2 run to take a 67-64 lead with 3:27 to play in regulation.

Down the stretch, the lead changed hands three times and the Blue Raiders came within one-point in the final minute of play, but Shawnee State hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to play in the game to take a 73-70 lead. Lindsey Wilson tried to tie the game on their final possession of the game, but the Bears hung onto the 73-70 victory.

The Blue Raiders lost their shooting touch in the second half as they went 14-for-37 from the floor to finish the game shooting 44.6 percent. On the opposite side, Shawnee State improved on their shooting in the second half going 14-for-21 from the field, to close out the game shooting a scorching 57.1 percent.

Lindsey Wilson concludes their four-game road trip at Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon, with the opening tip slated for 1 p.m. CT.
