Men's Soccer downs Cumberland 3-0 in top-25 battle

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 16-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team took down No. 19-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) by a 3-0 margin on Tuesday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (8-4-1, 4-0-1 Mid-South Conference) needed just three minutes and 17 seconds to go up 2-0 over the host Phoenix (8-5-1, 4-2-0 MSC), both goals coming from Andrew Revanales in a 20-second span.

Brian Richards started the first scoring attack as he served a rolling cross into the box from the right flank. Stephane Dasse quickly stepped over it and used a back-heel flick to pass it on to an open Revanales, who coolly fired into the right side of the goal for the 1-0 advantage in the third minute.

Just 20 seconds later, Revanales made it a two-goal lead in the fourth minute.

After a Cumberland turnover in their own half of the field, Aleksi Pahkasalo fed a ball on the break up to a sprinting Revanales, who outran the Phoenix defenders. Revanales took a pair of touches to control the ball before chipping the onrushing Cumberland goalkeeper, sending the shot into the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season.

The Blue Raiders continued to apply heavy pressure and nearly added a third goal in the 12th minute. After receiving a well hit long ball down the left side, Mutaya Mwape dribbled down near the end line before cutting back to the right into space in the box. Mwape then fired a curling effort that went past the Phoenix goalkeeper, but a Cumberland defender had tracked back and cleared the ball off the line before it could go in.

The Blue Raiders had four more excellent scoring chances in the half, but Cumberland keeper Bennet Strutz made four quality saves the keep it a two-goal deficit for the Phoenix at the break.

In all, Lindsey Wilson had unleashed eight shots in the opening 45 minutes, all of which were on goal. Cumberland managed just three shots, none on goal.

Cumberland recorded its first and only shot on target of the game in the 48th minute, but Alvaro Cortazar was there to save the header.

Revanales tried to complete his hat trick in the 52nd minute after Pahkasalo sent a long ball forward up the middle, but Strutz was quickly off his line to clear the ball away just before Revanales could bring it down.

From there it became a battle for possession in the midfield as just four more total shots were taken through the 89th minute.

Lindsey Wilson did tack on one final goal in the waning seconds. Andres Riquelme unleashed a shot that clanged off the post and back into play where Pahkasalo struck it cleanly into the back of the net for his team-leading 15th goal of the season with just over 30 seconds to play.

By the end of the 90 minutes Lindsey Wilson had outshot Cumberland 13-5 and 10-1 in shots on goal. Cortazar saved his lone shot on goal en route to the Blue Raiders' seventh shutout of the season. The Blue Raider defensive line aided in the shutout by keeping the Cumberland attackers at bay, and not allowing them to create many quality chances in the final third.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Oct. 23 at Pikeville (Ky.).
