Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team kept its perfect Mid-South Conference record intact as the Blue Raiders beat No. 12 Cumberland (Tenn.) 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
Yvonne Ploeg scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to break a 1-1 tie and help move LWC to the top of the MSC standings.
It marks the eighth-straight victory for the Blue Raiders (10-3-0, 5-0-0 MSC), who are the now the lone undefeated team in MSC play. The loss drops the Phoenix to 10-3-1 on the year with a 5-1-0 mark in conference games.
Cumberland applied heavy pressure to Lindsey Wilson right out of the gate. Johanna Henriksson was forced to make a save in the seventh minute in a one-on-one situation as the Phoenix racked up three corner kicks less than 10 minutes into the contest.
From there both teams battled for possession in the midfield, struggling to create quality chances in the final third.
The Blue Raider breakthrough finally came in the 32nd minute when Lindsey Wilson scored on just its second shot of the contest.
Veronica Kurtz-Martinez played a ball to Ploeg, who then played a give-and-go with Lyana Perez. Perez took Ploeg's chipped pass around the keeper and proceeded to beat her defender one-on-one and fire into the back of the open net to put the Blue Raiders ahead 1-0.
Lindsey Wilson came within inches of doubling the lead in the final seconds of the first half.
Annika Koemm received a ball out wide and dribbled all the way down to the end line, past charging Cumberland goalkeeper Ashley Kambeitz. Koemm shot from a tight angle, clipping the near post as the ball rolled right across the face of goal, waiting to be tapped in. Perez was the lone Blue Raider in the area, but Cumberland had four defenders track back at this point and prevented the Blue Raiders from getting a shot off, the ball eventually going behind for a corner. On that corner in the waning seconds, Shelby Austin nearly scored, but her looping header sailed just over the bar.
Lindsey Wilson was outshot 7-4 in the opening half and had three less corners than Cumberland.
Ploeg nearly doubled the lead twice just two minutes after halftime, but Kambeitz was there to save both attempts, including in a one-on-one situation.
Cumberland finally found the equalizer in the 57th minute. After the Blue Raiders failed to clear properly on a deflection, Olivia Chu won the battle for a loose ball and fired a shot above Henriksson's outstretched fingertips into the back of the net to tie the game. The goal ended a streak of 639-consecutive minutes without conceding for Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders thought they had an immediate response after putting the ball in the back of the net 30 seconds later, but the flag had gone up for offside.
After an exchange of shots from both sides, Ploeg was finally able to give Lindsey Wilson the breakthrough with a goal in the 79th minute.
Perez slid a perfectly timed through ball down the center to Ploeg, who connected with it and fired into the net to put Lindsey Wilson out front once again.
The Blue Raider defense held strong from there and Lindsey Wilson came away with the road win.
Cumberland outshot Lindsey Wilson 15-12, but the Blue Raiders had the advantage in shots on goal 7-3.
Lindsey Wilson has a quick turnaround as the Blue Raiders head to Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday for an afternoon matchup.
