Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Lyana Perez scored two goals in the final six minutes to help the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team come from behind and defeat Cumberland (Tenn.) 2-1 on Friday night in the Mid-South Conference Tournament championship match at Jim Ross Field at Warren East High School.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 62nd minute, Perez scored on a pair of rebounds in the 84th and 87th minutes to help Lindsey Wilson lift the program's 15th all-time tournament title since joining the league in 2000.
The victory secures the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the fourth-ranked Blue Raiders (15-3-0). Cumberland (12-4-2) now must wait to see if they receive an at-large bid into the tournament field.
It was a familiar showdown in the title game as Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland have met in four of the previous five conference championship games, Lindsey Wilson holding a 2-1 advantage entering the night.
The first 45 minutes were a battle for possession in the midfield as there were just five total shots in the opening half, one on target from each team.
Cumberland had the first shot on goal in the 22nd minute when Kaitlen Kisiloski softly headed a free kick towards goal, but Johanna Henriksson collected it easily.
The Blue Raiders had their lone scoring opportunity in the opening half in the 26th minute. Yvonne Ploeg received a pass through the middle and quickly fired on goal, but Cumberland keeper Ashley Kambeitz was quickly off her line to block the shot away.
Cumberland had an early chance in second half after Emily Shires was slid a ball behind the Blue Raider defense, but Henriksson rushed out and did enough to deter the shot as Shires fired wide by inches.
Cumberland finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, once again with Shires getting on the end of a long pass. Mariah Aplin sent a through ball up the middle to Shires, who outran the Blue Raider defenders and slotted the ball past an onrushing Henriksson, this time sneaking the ball just inside the post for the score.
Lindsey Wilson had a chance to find the equalizer a few minutes later after a scramble in the box, but Perez saw her shot saved. The Blue Raiders continued to send players forward and get shots off, but Kambeitz was there to answer the call each time. Veronica Kurtz-Martinez rifled a volleyed shot that deflected towards goal but Kambeitz made a diving effort to make the save.
Lindsey Wilson finally found the tying goal in the 84th minute. A ball was sent into the box from the left-hand side. Shelby Austin knocked a ball forward to Ploeg, who rattled a shot off the crossbar and back into play where Perez smashed it home to tie the game 1-1.
Minutes later, Lindsey Wilson would find the go-ahead goal.
Kurtz-Martinez found some space on the left hand side and rifled a shot that clattered off the crossbar and back into play, where once again Perez followed the shot and kicked in the rebound to put the Blue Raiders ahead 2-1 with just over three minutes to play.
Cumberland had one final chance to find their own equalizer after the Phoenix were awarded a free kick on the right sideline with 40 seconds to play. The cross went in and a looping shot was headed for the Blue Raider goal, but Perez once again saved the day, clearing the ball off the line to secure the 2-1 victory.
By the end of the night Lindsey Wilson outshot Cumberland 14-9 overall and 8-3 in shots on target.
Lindsey Wilson plays again in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on Nov. 19. The pairings for the tournament will be released on Monday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. CT.
