No. 5 Women's Basketball escapes with 61-58 road win over Middle Georgia State

Box Score

COCHRAN, Ga. – Despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers and shooting a season-low 31.8 percent from the field, the No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team escaped with a 61-58 win over an upset-minded Middle Georgia State squad on Thursday evening at the Robert E. Curry Christian Life Center.

The Blue Raiders (5-0) had to rally from a six-point deficit with less than four minutes to go in the game to topple the Knights (2-3). Eight points from Kayla Richardson in the final minutes – including a pair of key three pointers – and a 4-for-4 performance at the charity stripe from Kayla Styles and Heidi Huffman in the final 30 seconds helped keep the Blue Raiders unbeaten on the season.

Styles racked up her third double-double of the year, pouring in a season-high 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, while J'Nayah Hall recorded her first double-double as a Blue Raider with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Richardson and Chanel Roberts also went into double-digit points with 12 and 11, respectively.

Lindsey Wilson quickly fell behind as the Knights took an 11-4 lead to start the game. The Blue Raiders responded with a 7-0 run in the final 90 seconds of the quarter to turn a five-point deficit into a two-point lead at 15-13. That run included a Hall three pointer, the Blue Raiders' first of the game after missing their first four attempts.

The Knights took advantage of another Blue Raider dry spell in the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run to take a 26-17 lead. Hall finally put an end to the four-minute drought with a jumper at the 3:33 mark to make it 26-19.

Middle Georgia State ended up outscoring the Blue Raiders 17-6 in the second quarter and took a 30-21 lead into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson shot just 26.5 percent from the floor in the first half and made just one attempt from beyond the arc (1-for-7). The Knights shot 28.2 percent, but hit 4-of-16 attempts from three-point range.

The Blue Raiders were also hampered by 13 first-half turnovers which led to them trailing at halftime for the first time all season.

Styles had 12 first-half rebounds and Hall led the team with seven points, but no other Blue Raider scored more than four in the opening 20 minutes.

Lindsey Wilson responded after the break by outscoring the Knights 19-9 in the third quarter. The Blue Raiders were able to retake the lead for the first time since the early stages of the second quarter after a Roberts' basket made it 39-37 late in the third. Lindsey Wilson closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a slim 40-39 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.

Middle Georgia State took the lead back in the fourth after the hot-shooting Shaketa Hodges hit back-to-back threes to make it 50-46, part of an 8-0 run halfway through the quarter.

Down by four, Richardson hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, just the team's second and third makes from three-point range all night, putting Lindsey Wilson back out front 54-52 with 1:48 to go.

Richardson hit another basket with 59 seconds to play to extend the lead to five, and Styles and Huffman took care of business at the free-throw line to help Lindsey Wilson cap off the 61-58 win.

Lindsey Wilson hit just 3-of-15 attempts from deep while the Knights made 9-of-31 attempts.

Hodges led the Knights with a game-high 29 points, including hitting 7-of-15 shots from three-point range.

The Blue Raiders continue their tour of the Peach State when Lindsey Wilson heads to Coastal Georgia on Saturday for an 11 a.m. CT tipoff.
