Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – A 17-point edge in the second quarter helped the Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team complete the season sweep of Georgetown (Ky.) with a 92-64 victory on Thursday night in Biggers Sports Center.
No. 22-ranked Lindsey Wilson employed an aggressive defensive effort throughout the game and took advantage of the turnovers they forced Georgetown into, capitalizing with 26 points off of 16 turnovers. The Blue Raiders racked up 11 steals on the night and committed a season-low six turnovers of their own.
Both squads came into the contest on five-game win streaks, but only the Blue Raiders (20-4, 6-3 Mid-South Conference) would continue their streak as they shot 47.8 percent from the field en route to the 28-point victory over the Tigers (12-12, 7-5 MSC).
After a 64-52 win in Georgetown the first go around, five Blue Raiders notched double-digit points in Thursday's victory led by Chanel Roberts' 17. Cameron McPherson added a career-high 15 points, Teanna Curry had 14, Malerie Martin had 10 and newcomer Kayla Styles had an impressive debut pouring in 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting while grabbing seven boards. Courtney Sandlin matched Styles' team high with seven rebounds.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair with a neither team able to create much separation until late in the first quarter. Georgetown led 13-11, but a quick 7-0 run by Lindsey Wilson put the Blue Raiders back on top 18-13. Lindsey Wilson extended that lead to 21-15 by the end of the first quarter.
It was all Lindsey Wilson in the second quarter as the Blue Raiders cranked up the defensive intensity and began making shots from all over the floor on the offensive end with the help of their fluent transition offense.
After the Tigers hit a three to start the second period, Lindsey Wilson proceeded to go on a 30-10 run to close out the quarter, including a string of 10-straight points. The Blue Raiders picked up strong defensive pressure on the ball and began forcing the Tigers into bad passes. Those turnovers were instantly turned into points as Lindsey Wilson raced down the court on fast breaks for easy buckets.
During the run, the Blue Raider offense used quick passes and drives inside the lane to score on high-percentage shots, collecting 30 of the points inside the paint alone in the opening half.
At the halftime whistle, Lindsey Wilson had shot 52.6 percent from the field compared to 33.3 percent by Georgetown. The Blue Raiders racked up seven steals in the opening 20 minutes and forced the Tigers into nine turnovers. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball from beyond the arc, each making just two attempts.
Things slowed down to start the second half as the two teams combined for just five points in the first four minutes of action.
Georgetown trimmed the lead to 53-34, but Roberts then hit a layup followed by a banked in three-pointer to make it 61-34, a 27-point Lindsey Wilson lead. Lindsey Wilson cooled off a bit offensively, but the Tigers still struggled to find a consistent shooting rhythm of their own.
By the end of the third quarter, the strong defense in the half court and the ability to get to the free throw line had helped Lindsey Wilson build a 71-42 lead.
The Blue Raiders eased the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, transitioning to a zone defense to force the Tigers to shoot from outside. Georgetown began making some shots, but Lindsey Wilson was ready to answer with baskets of their own keep the Tigers at a comfortable distance as the Blue Raiders won 92-64.
Kennedy Flynn led the Tigers with 12 points in the loss. Georgetown shot 37.5 percent from the field with a 23.8 percentage from beyond the arc.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday as they host No. 7 Shawnee State (Ohio) with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
