Seventh-ranked Men's Swimming concludes MSC Championships in third place

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – At the conclusion of the 2016 Mid-South Conference Championship, the seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's swimming team finished in third-place overall.

The Blue Raiders earned 385.5 points over the three days, while Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) won the MSC Championship with 663 points in their first season in the conference. Cumberlands (Ky.) finished in second-place with 456.5 points.

Clemens Patzold started the final day of action at the MSC Championships for Lindsey Wilson with a third-place finish in the prelims of the 200-yard backstroke. He finished the race with a time of 2:01.06.

Patzold earned another second-place finish in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke as he posted a time of 1:52.84, which set a new program record. Daniel Buijs of Lindenwood-Belleville won the title in the event with a time of 1:48.91.

In a packed field for the 100-yard freestyle prelims, the Blue Raiders had six swimmers in the field of 24 racers. Iker Larzabal and Zachary Patzer finished in third and fourth, respectively, as they both qualified for the A finals. Larzabal's time of 48.03 and Patzer's 48.38 both hit national A standards.

Taylor Thompson qualified for the B finals with an eighth-place finished after posting a time of 49.09, which qualified as a national bonus cut. Mark Richard just missed out on the final spot in the B finals after he finished in 13th with a time of 51.13. Turk Dogruyol and Dakota Hope were the final two Lindsey Wilson swimmers in the field as they finished in 15th and 21st, respectively.

In the A finals of the 100-yard freestyle, Larzabal and Patzer remained in third and fourth, respectively. Larzabal swam a time of 47.91 and Patzer finished with a time of 47.99. In the B finals, Thompson posted an eighth-place finish after completing the heat in a time of 49.13.

Jonas Mueller continued to have strong results in the breaststroke after he finished the prelims of the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:13.34, which placed him in second heading into the finals. Mueller also hit the national A cut.

Mueller earned Lindsey Wilson's first championship of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke after he set a new championship record of 2:07.45.

Gage Setzer and Travis Durocher were the final two Blue Raiders to compete in preliminary heats on the third day of the conference championships, as they competed in the 200-yard butterfly. Setzer qualified for the championships with a third-place finish in the prelims after recording a time of 2:02.37. Durocher qualified for the B finals after finishing prelims in seventh with a time of 2:06.10.

In the finals of the 200-yard butterfly, Setzer posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:01.48, while Durocher's time of 2:27.14 placed him seventh overall. Cumberlands' Igor Dozortsev won the event with a time of 1:53.09.

Lindsey Wilson had a trio of swimmers compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and Jose Prado de Lima led the way for the Blue Raiders with a time of 17:02.51, which placed him third overall. Ryan Leamy finished in sixth place with a time of 17:19.46, while Alexander Van Winkle's time of 18:23.12 slotted him in 10th place.

In the lone relay of the day, Lindsey Wilson had Patzold, Prado de Lima, Patzer and Larzabal compete in the 400-yard freestyle relay where they finished in third place with at time of 3:10.63. Lindenwood-Belleville won the event after posting a time of 3:05.16, while second place Cumberlands finished in 3:10.14.

At the conclusion of the three day event, Mueller was the lone Blue Raider to earn First Team All Mid-South Conference honors as he did so in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events. Patzold and Larzabal appeared on the All-MSC Second Team for Lindsey Wilson. Patzold earned the honor in the 200-yard individual medley, and the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. Larzabal was placed on team after finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Daniel Buijs of Lindenwood-Belleville earned Swimmer of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors at the conclusion of the event.

The Blue Raiders now prepare for the 2016 NAIA National Championships in Columbus, Ga., which begins on March 2.
