Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – After winning on last second three-pointer on Friday, the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team found themselves on the opposite end of a last second shot on Saturday as No. 21 Cumberlands (Ky.) escaped with a 56-55 victory in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The Blue Raiders (17-14) had three players in double figures as Bryan Wallace led the team with a game-high 19 points. Ja'Ln Williams chipped in with 12 points off the bench, while Charles Sutton recorded 10 points against the Patriots (22-10).
Cumberlands started the game on a 7-2 run over the first 3:30, but Lindsey Wilson did not let the game slip away as they battled back to take their first lead of the game at the 10:40 mark in the first half as Hannes Erhardt hit a shot for the Blue Raiders.
After Lindsey Wilson took the lead, they did not relinquish it until there was 4:58 left to play in the half as Temjae Singleton knocked down a shot for the Patriots to give them a 20-18 advantage.
Offense was at a premium in the first half of the game as it was tied, 23-23, at the half.
The Blue Raiders shot 36.4 percent from the floor in the opening half, while they were 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Cumberlands was 32.1 percent and they made 4-of-16 shots from behind the arc.
Lindsey Wilson scored the first basket of the second half, but a seesaw battle ensued at the start of the second half as the lead changed hands four times over the first five minutes. The Blue Raiders continued to struggle on offense as they were held without a field goal for nearly five minutes until Utolin knocked down a shot with 10:46 left in regulation as they trailed 37-36.
The shot from Utolin started a 5-0 run for Lindsey Wilson as they took 39-37 advantage with 9:19 to play. The back-and-forth battle continued as the Patriots scored five-straight points to regain the lead.
Cumberlands was able to stretch their lead to five points, and they matched their largest lead of the first with six points as they grabbed a 49-43 lead with 2:57 left in regulation. With just under a minute to play and Lindsey Wilson trailing 51-47, Marquis Johns stole the Patriots inbound pass then Wallace passed to Williams in the paint and he converted the layup to make it a 51-49 game with 43 seconds to play.
The Patriots hit a fast break layup on their next inbound play, but Sutton hit two free throws to bring the game back within two points. After a missed free throw from Cumberlands, the Blue Raiders came down and tied the game at 53 after Wallace banked in a layup. Johns stole ball on the next Cumberlands possession and Williams dished the ball to Wallace to give Lindsey Wilson a 55-53 lead with six seconds to play.
Temaje Singleton knocked down a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock to give the Patriots a 56-55 lead. A last second shot from Utolin was off the mark as Cumberlands came away with a 56-55 victory.
Lindsey Wilson finished the game shooting 35.4 percent from the floor, while Cumberlands was 36.8 percent in the game. The Patriots were 3-for-6 from beyond the arc in the second half and they finished the game shooting 31.8 percent from three. The Blue Raiders finished the game shooting just 18.2 from three-point land.
The Blue Raiders conclude their season with a record of 17-14.
