Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team fell to No. 6-ranked William Carey (Miss.) 4-0 on Monday night.
The loss was the Blue Raiders' (2-1-0) biggest home defeat since losing 4-0 to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 16, 1995.
William Carey (2-0-0) rode a potent counterattack to a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute. To that point, Lindsey Wilson was mounting uninterrupted pressure on the Crusaders – tallying two shots and earning three corner kicks.
The pressure nearly produced a goal for the Blue Raiders in the fifth minute, when Veronica Kurtz-Martinez saw her free kick deflect off the goal post.
Less than a minute later, William Carey capitalized on a counterattacking run down the left flank. Silvia Leonessi served the ball into the 18-yard box and the cross found the head of Jamie Holifield, who flicked it on to April Stewart for the goal.
Lindsey Wilson pushed their deficit to 2-0 with an own goal in the 36th minute.
The Blue Raiders generated more chances than William Carey in the first half – outshooting their foe 8-3. Additionally, Lindsey Wilson took four corners in the first half to the Crusaders' one.
The Crusaders tacked on their third goal of the night in the 47th minute on a Savanah Carter shot.
With a secure lead, William Carey settled back on defense. Lindsey Wilson outshot the Crusaders 8-6 in the second half, but only three were on goal.
Another William Carey counter led to the fourth and final goal of the night in the 86th minute. Kaylee Zettler outran the Blue Raiders defense on a lob pass and then shot the ball past an onrushing Johanna Henriksson.
Abby Baravik stopped seven shots for William Carey to pick up her second shutout of the year.
The loss snapped a 15-match home unbeaten streak by the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson last lost at home to William Carey back on Sept. 25, 2014.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Lima, Ohio to face No. 3-ranked Northwestern Ohio – the Blue Raiders' third consecutive match against a top-10 ranked foe.
