Women's Soccer falls 2-1 to Spring Arbor in NAIA Game of the Week

Box Score

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback tonight to top-ranked Spring Arbor (Mich.) in the NAIA Women's Soccer Game of the Week at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

The game was a rematch of last season's national title game -- a Spring Arbor 3-0 win.

The loss marks the third straight for the Blue Raiders -- all coming against nationally ranked teams. The three-game losing streak is the first for the Blue Raiders since LWC dropped the last two games of the 2005 season and the first game of the 2006 season.

Delfina Santellan opened the match's scoring in the 22nd minute to give Lindsey Wilson (2-3) a 1-0 lead. Santellan made the most of the lone shot on goal in the opening half for the Blue Raiders, blasting a free kick from just outside the penalty area to notch her first goal of the season.

The goal was the first conceded this season by the Cougars (5-0).

Lindsey Wilson owned the 1-0 lead despite the Cougars controlling the run of play for the majority of the first half. Spring Arbor outshot the Blue Raiders 10-3, including 7-1 in shots on target in the opening 45 minutes.

The Cougars' offensive pressure finally took its toll in the 38th minute as Aubrey Schierbeek leveled the match at 1-1 off a Bethany Balcer assist.

The two teams played scoreless over the final seven minutes of the half to hit the break at 1-1.

The match remained tied until the 67th minute. Schierbeek found the back of the net for a second time in the game and a third time this season to nudge the Cougars in front 2-1.

The Blue Raiders -- who outshot their hosts 5-4 after the break, including 2-1 in shots on goal -- had a pair of chances for an equalizer. However, Spring Arbor goalkeeper Ashley Timmons -- who ended the game with two saves -- turned both attempts away.

Lindsey Wilson's Johanna Henriksson allowed both Spring Arbor goals while collecting five saves in the loss.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 16, as the Blue Raiders host No. 20-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) as part of the Lindsey Wilson Classic at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
