No. 19 Men's Soccer falls to No. 2 Rio Grande on late goal

COLUMBIA, Ky. – No. 19-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer yielded a goal in the 87th minute in a 2-1 losing effort against No. 2-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) Friday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The goal, scored by Jorge Guinovart, broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the RedStorm (8-1-0) past the Blue Raiders (4-3-0).

Lindsey Wilson pulled ahead early in the second half when Mutaya Mwape scored in the 47th minute. Aleksi Pahkasalo played a long ball to the charging Mwape who pushed the ball to the left of the goalkeeper.

The two teams continued trading opportunities throughout a frantic second half that saw a combined 24 shots.

Pau Delgado Rodriguez tied the match in the 62nd minute with an unassisted goal.

Rio Grande continued pressing until Guinovart netted the game-winner, which was assisted by Lucas Talaveira-Befi.

The Blue Raiders outshot the RedStorm 18-17 for the match but only put four shots on target while 10 Rio Grande shots were on goal.

Alvaro Cortazar recorded a career-high eight saves in the losing effort.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Sept. 27 with a road contest against Cumberlands (Ky.) in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
