Women's Soccer tops Campbellsville 2-1 in regular season finale Wednesday

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team wrapped up the 2017 regular season with a 2-1 win over conference rival Campbellsville (Ky.) on Wednesday night at Finley Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson (7-5-3, 5-2-0 Mid-South Conference) scored both goals in the first half and had to hold off a late Campbellsville (6-10-1, 4-2-1 MSC) surge after the Tigers scored with 10 minutes to play. The Blue Raiders are now a perfect 23-0-0 all-time against Campbellsville.

With the victory, Lindsey Wilson secured the No. 2 seed at next month's Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Lindsey Wilson needed just 12 minutes to open up the scoring in the first half after a goal by Shelby Austin.

After Austin won the corner herself with a deep run from her fullback position, the Blue Raiders capitalized on the ensuing set piece.

Emma Gustafsson sent in a corner that Austin met at the far post with a diving effort and powered a header in the top-right corner to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 1-0.

Just before the halftime break, Lindsey Wilson doubled the lead in the 41st minute.

Veronica Kurtz made a run down the left flank and was able to create some separation from her defender. She lofted a ball in the box that Emelie Liljered one-touched off to Amara Safuan, who smashed home from close range to make it 2-0.

Lindsey Wilson outshot Campbellsville 8-2 in the first half, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. LWC also managed three corners and held the Tigers without one in the first 45 minutes.

The second half was a battle for possession and quality chances by both sides before Campbellsville cut one back in the 80th minute, creating a tense final 10 minutes of play.

The Tigers' Rachel McWilliams picked up a loose ball after a scramble and fired a high looping shot that soared into the top-left corner from 35 yards out to make it 2-1.

Campbellsville had a chance to find an equalizer late in the game after a scramble in the box, but the Blue Raider defenders were able to clear the ball out of their own six-yard box.

Lindsey Wilson nearly ended the drama with 45 seconds to go but Kaitlin Cook's shot from just outside the 18-yard box rattled off the cross bar.

Lindsey Wilson finished the contest outshooting the Tigers 21-5, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue Raiders were denied repeatedly by Tiger goalkeeper Amanda Howard, who finished with 11 saves.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Friday, Nov. 3 for the MSC Tournament Quarterfinals at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Ky.
