Women's Soccer falls 3-1 in top-25 battle with Cumberland

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 12 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer dropped its first Mid-South Conference contest of the season, falling to No. 25 Cumberland (Tenn.) 3-1 on Friday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (4-4-3, 2-1 in the Mid-South) ultimately outshot their guests 20-14 but struggled in the final third of the field en route to the setback.

Cumberland snagged a 1-0 lead in the opening half as Rebecca Holloway blasted a 40-yard free kick over Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic and into the back of the goal. The Phoenix (7-3-1, 3-0) -- who ended the evening very efficient, putting nine of their 14 shots on goal -- took the one-goal lead into the break.

Cumberland scored a pair of goals in a 90-second span early in the second half to take control of the match.

Jennifer Segura scored in the 54th minutes off Emily Shires' assist and Shires added a goal in the 56th minute to push the Phoenix in front 3-0.

Lindsey Wilson finally broke through in the 81st minute as Emelie Liljered scored off Hannah Schrage's assist to trim the deficit to 3-1.

The Blue Raiders had three legitimate chances to cut into the Cumberland lead in the final four minutes only to be turned away from Phoenix goalkeeper Ashley Kambeitz. Kambeitz ended the match with five saves.

Lindsey Wilson was scheduled to face Mobile (Ala.) on Tuesday, Oct. 10, but the Tropical Storm Nate and the forecasted rains early next week in the Gulf forced the cancellation.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 14, as Lindsey Wilson hosts Pikeville (Ky.) at Reuling Stadium.
