Women's Soccer moves into MSC Semifinals with 4-0 victory over Life

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's soccer secured a spot in the Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 win over seventh-seeded Life (Ga.) on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round at Joe Hood Field.

The Blue Raiders (8-5-3) face third-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday, Nov. 9 in the first of two semifinals at Warren Central High School.

Four different Blue Raiders scored in the victory, with LWC outshooting the Running Eagles 21-2 overall and 11-0 in shots on goal.

Lindsey Wilson had plenty of possession early in the first half, sending multiple crosses into the Life 18-yard box within the first 10 minutes of play, but was unable to find a goal-scoring combination.

That combination came in the 11th minute when Delfina Santellan played a ball through the middle up to Veronica Kurtz. Kurtz latched onto the end of the pass and found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Life goalkeeper, where she slotted it past the onrushing keeper for the 1-0 lead.

That lead was doubled in the 17th minute thanks to another combination buildup from Emma Lindell and Emma Gustafsson.

Lindell took a ball deep down the left flank, got to the end line, and fired a low cross back into the middle where Gustafsson met it near the penalty spot. Gustafsson one touched the ball to settle it before firing just inside the far post for the 2-0 lead.

With just over six minutes to play in the half, Lindsey Wilson nearly added a third goal after a wild sequence.

The Blue Raiders were awarded an indirect free kick just six yards outside of the Life goal. Lindell one touched the ball off to Amara Safuan, who tried to blast the ball past the 10-person Life wall standing right on the goal line, but was unable to do so. The ball deflected back to Kaitlin Cook, who rattled a shot off the crossbar from 18 yards out. The ball bounced back into play where Gustafsson headed it into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as Gustafsson was deemed to be in an offside position.

At halftime, Lindsey Wilson had recorded 11 shots, four on target, while holding Life without a shot.

The Blue Raiders added a third goal early in the second half to make it 3-0.

Gustafsson sent a corner kick into the box in the 52nd minute. Emelie Liljered, who was on the receiving end of multiple crosses but unable to strike one cleanly on goal, was finally able to connect with a cross and redirect it into the net for the score.

With just under 15 minutes to play, Hannah Schrage made it a 4-0 lead for the Blue Raiders, taking advantage of another LWC set piece.

Gustafsson once again delivered a quality corner kick. The Running Eagles cleared the initial cross, but the second-chance ball fell right to Schrage, who fired in the rebound from eight yards out for the score.

Liljered finished the contest with six shots, while Life's Pien van Kampen made seven saves in the loss.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action next Thursday in the semifinals at Joe Hood Field.
