Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with a 76-72 win over Indiana Wesleyan at the First Bank Richmond Classic on Friday night.
Kayla Styles posted her first double-double of the season with game highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds, including a 16-for-18 mark from the free throw line. She also added two blocks, four steals and five assists. Reagan Turner recorded 19 points in her collegiate debut, grabbing eight rebounds and playing 39 minutes in the contest. Teanna Curry and Heidi Huffman both finished in double figures with 10, Huffman collecting nine of her points on three pointers.
It was a back-and-forth affair as Indiana Wesleyan (1-1) built a 23-13 lead following the first 10 minutes of play. The Blue Raiders (1-0) answered right back in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 23-12 in the period, including a Dakota Smith basket just before halftime to give LWC a 36-35 lead at the break.
Lindsey Wilson would maintain the lead for the remainder of the game, despite the Wildcats clawing the contest back to a one-possession game multiple times, including in the final minute.
LWC took a 57-50 lead into the fourth quarter, stretching that lead to double digits after a Gerda Paulauskaite basket made it 61-51 with 8:24 to play. A Curry basket made it 68-57, the largest lead of the night for Lindsey Wilson with just under five minutes to play.
But Indiana Wesleyan inched closer and closer to the Blue Raiders, using a 10-2 run in a three-minute span to make it 70-67 with 1:20 to play.
On a Blue Raider possession under their own basket and with the shot clock dwindling, an inbounds pass went to Styles where she was triple teamed. Styles found her freshman teammate Turner, who knocked down a corner three to make it 73-67 with 48 seconds to go.
Indiana Wesleyan answered with a three of their own on the ensuing possession, and after a Blue Raider turnover, a pair of free throws made it a one-point LWC lead at 73-72 with just over 30 seconds to play.
Styles later hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 74-72, and the Wildcats had the ball with nine seconds to go, but the LWC defense came through and forced Carly Lange into a travelling violation. Turner then hit 1-of-2 free throws and after another big defensive effort, this time a steal from Styles, Huffman hit one free throw to ice the game at 76-72.
Nicole Ignasiak had 21 points and Katie Key added 15 in the loss for the Wildcats.
The Blue Raiders wrap up the First Bank Richmond Classic on Saturday as they face Tennessee Wesleyan at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.
