No. 10 Women's Soccer wraps up LWC Classic with 2-1 win over No. 18 Embry-Riddle

Box Score

COLUMBIA Ky. – The No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated No. 18 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) during the final day of the Lindsey Wilson Classic Saturday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The victory was the first for the Blue Raiders (2-2-3) since they defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in the season opener back on Aug. 19.

Lindsey Wilson struck first during the 13th minute when a Micah Holmes cross found Amara Safuan inside the six-yard box, who then one-touched the ball around an Eagle defender before firing past Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Caitlyn Aaron. It marks the first assist for Holmes in a Blue Raider uniform.

The Eagles (4-3-0) answered with a goal of their own in the 25th minute when Krista Lee beat a Blue Raider defender one-on-one and fired a shot at the far post. LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic made the initial diving save, but the ball deflected back into play where a wide-open Riley Martinson knocked the ball into the goal to level the match.

Lindsey Wilson went into the break tied 1-1, holding a 10-6 advantage in shots, but were tied in shots on goal with five apiece in the first 45 minutes.

Veronica Kurtz put the Blue Raiders back out front for good in the form of a game-winning goal in the 74th minute, her first goal of the 2017 campaign.

Kurtz darted inside from the right flank, past a pair of Eagle defenders, before unleashing a shot from five yards outside of the 18-yard box that soared just above the outstretched hands of the Embry-Riddle goalkeeper and just below the crossbar for the score.

From there, the Blue Raider defense held strong for the final 15 minutes to secure Lindsey Wilson's first home win of the season. Ivanovic recorded three saves in net while Kurtz let all Blue Raiders with four shots during the match.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 22, as the Blue Raiders travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on No. 7 William Carey (Miss.).
