Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer dropped its first match of the season on Sunday with a 2-1 setback to No. 4 Rio Grande (Ohio) at Evan D. Davis Field.
The Blue Raiders (4-1) nearly overcame a two-goal deficit and playing a man down but came up just short in the top-10 battle.
Rio Grande (6-1) took a 1-0 advantage in the 34th minute as a Lindsey Wilson foul just outside the penalty area set up the score. Matheus Morgan's free-kick sailed deep into the box where Silas Machado headed it past LWC goalkeeper William Diaz for the lead.
Rio -- who controlled much of the first-half play -- took the 1-0 lead into the break. The RedStorm outshot the Blue Raiders 9-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
The RedStorm doubled their lead in the 64th minute. Spencer Reinford provided the goal as he rebounded his first shot -- a Diaz save -- and blasted the second chance into the ceiling of the net for the 2-0 lead. Diaz allowed both goals while stopping six Rio shots.
Twelve minutes later, a Lindsey Wilson comeback looked highly unlikely as Andres Riquelme was sent off with a red card. Seven cards and 26 fouls -- 13 by each team -- were issued during the highly-contested match.
The resilient Blue Raiders turned the tables on their host despite playing with 10 men for the final 13 minutes. Lindsey Wilson outshot Rio Grande 4-0 after going a man down and 9-6 in the second frame.
The final Lindsey Wilson shot of the night resulted in a Blue Raider goal as Mutaya Mwape scored on a penalty kick in the 87th minute to trim the deficit to 2-1.
The RedStorm managed to kill off the final three-plus minutes to secure the win.
Rio Grande finished the game out-shooting Lindsey Wilson 15-11, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Sept. 26, as the Blue Raiders travel to Shawnee State (Ohio) for their Mid-South Conference opener at Shawnee Turf.
