Liljered scores twice; women's soccer defeats Georgia Gwinnett 2-1 at NAIA National Championship Second Round

Box Score

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The No. 10-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team overcame a one goal deficit in the second half to defeat No. 7-seed Georgia Gwinnett 2-1 during the Second Round of the NAIA National Championship. Emelie Liljered scored two goals eleven minutes apart during the 67th and 78th minute to push the Blue Raiders past the Grizzlies.

Lindsey Wilson (13-3-2) outshot the Georgia Gwinnett (17-4-0) 11-7 including 5-3 for shots on goal in the match. Blue Raider goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic anchored the LWC defense on the afternoon as she made two saves.

The Grizzlies and the Blue Raiders played to an even 0-0 score after the first half as the two squads battled to gain possession in the middle third. Lindsey Wilson was able to outshoot the Grizzlies 4-3 in the half as both teams managed just one shot on goal.

Georgia Gwinnett scored the game's first goal during the 57th minute off a corner kick. Ana Gonzales set a ball into the box that jostled off a few players before Joy Mertzig was able to gather the ball and score towards the left post.

From there it was all the Blue Raiders as they were able to manage possession of the ball and create quality scoring opportunities while limiting the Grizzlies to just two more shots in the contest. LWC would tally six shots, four of the attempts making their way on goal over the final 32 minutes of action.

Liljered would tie the game at 1-1 when Sina Cavelti tallied her first of two assists on an excellent effort play. Cavelti drove hard into the 18-yard box challenging a Georgia Gwinnett defender but was tripped up. While falling to the ground the MSC Freshman of the Year managed to play the ball to an open Liljered who fired her from 20-yards out past a diving goalkeeper.

With just 12:30 left in the match Liljered would give the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Cavelti again started the play, this time driving the ball down the left side of the field towards the end line before crossing a ball into the 18-yard box. Alicia Thoresen was on the receiving end of the play and was able to one touch the ball to an open Liljered who finished into a wide-open goal.

Both squads would tally one more shot each, but LWC goalkeeper Ivanovic was there to shut the door on the Grizzlies final scoring chance of the game with just over two minutes remaining.

The Blue Raiders advance to the quarterfinals where they will face William Carey (Miss.) at 4 p.m. CT tomorrow at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
