Strong fourth quarter helps Women's Basketball move past Cumberlands 74-57 in MSC Quarterfinals

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A strong fourth quarter by the No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team helped the Blue Raiders move past Cumberlands (Ky.) 74-57 in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Thursday at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.

With a seven-point advantage heading to the fourth, the third-seeded Blue Raiders (25-6) scored the first six points of the quarter to help build a lead that never dipped below double digits for the remainder of the game en route to the 17-point victory over the sixth-seeded Patriots (16-13).

Lindsey Wilson now faces No. 3-ranked and second-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday in the semifinals with tipoff scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.

Kayla Styles poured in 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Reagan Turner collected 16 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 mark from the charity stripe. Teanna Curry added 10 points and Gerda Paulauskaite had eight points and eight rebounds.

After winning both regular season matchups, the Blue Raiders completed the season hat-trick after an early fourth-quarter surge helped LWC pull away.

It was a battle of two Kaylas to start the action as Styles and Cumberlands' Kayla Bruner traded baskets back-and-forth during the opening minutes. Styles scored the first four points of the game, but Bruner helped give Cumberlands the lead after scoring the first eight of the contest for the Patriots. Styles answered with a contested-stepback jumper to make it 8-8, but Cumberlands prevailed in the final minutes of the quarter to take a 13-11 lead at the end of the first.

Turner helped put LWC back in front by scoring the first five points of the second quarter to make it 16-13, the first Blue Raider lead since 4-3. The Patriots hit back-to-back 3-pointers to retake the lead at 19-16, but Lindsey Wilson scored the next seven points, part of an 11-2 run that made it 27-21 in the late stages of the second quarter. Lindsey Wilson was able to build the small lead after trimming their six turnovers in the first quarter down to two in the second. Cumberlands added a pair of free throws in the final minute, but the Blue Raiders took a 27-23 lead into halftime.

Both sides struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first half as LWC shot 34.6 percent (9-26) and Cumberlands shot 28.6 percent (8-28). The Patriots did hit 5-of-10 3-pointers while LWC missed all 10 of their attempts from beyond the arc.

The Patriots used a 7-2 run out of halftime to retake the lead at 30-29, only for the Blue Raiders to answer with a 9-1 run that made it 38-31 with 5:48 to play in the third. Lindsey Wilson led the remainder of the quarter but had trouble shaking off the Patriots as Cumberlands always had a timely basket to limit the separation. Lindsey Wilson led by as little as three and by as many as seven during the final half of the quarter, taking a 51-44 lead in to the fourth.

That much sought-after separation finally came at the start of the fourth when Styles and Turner combined to score the first six points of the frame and push the Blue Raider lead to 57-44. The LWC run was aided by Cumberlands going 0-for-6 from the floor to start the quarter and not hitting a basket in the first 4:53 of action. Lindsey Wilson was able to maintain the separation for the remainder of the game as the lead never dipped below double digits.

Lindsey Wilson finished the contest shooting 46.4 percent (26-56), but failed to make a 3-pointer (0-13) for the first time all season. Cumberlands shot 36.4 percent (20-55) and made 8-of-20 3-pointers.

The Blue Raiders excelled at taking care of the basketball in the second half, turning the ball over just twice. Conversely, Cumberlands turned the ball over 15 times which LWC turned into 22 points. LWC also racked up 42 of their 74 points in the paint.

Bruner led Cumberlands with 24 points in the loss while Shayla Simpson added 11.

Lindsey Wilson now faces Campbellsville in the MSC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
