Women's Soccer wins season opener, beats Mount Vernon Nazarene 1-0

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 22 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer made a first-half goal stand up in a 1-0 win over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) tonight at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson (1-0) improves to 20-2-5 all-time in season openers, including winning six straight dating back to the 2013 season.

Emma Lindell scored the first goal of the season for the Blue Raiders in the 34th minute to give Lindsey Wilson the lead. Sina Cavelti set up the goal, beating a pair of defenders near the end line. She played the ball back to Lindell who blasted a shot into the roof of the net for the 1-0 lead. The assist is Cavelti's first of her career.

Lindsey Wilson closed the half out-shooting the Cougars 7-5.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (1-1) proved to be the aggressor out of the break. The Cougars posted the first four shots of the second frame but failed to find the back of the net.

Lindsey Wilson -- who finished the game putting seven of its 10 shots on target -- recorded its first shot of the second half in the 62nd minute as Amara Safuan knuckled a free kick from 24 yards out into the arms of Cougar goalkeeper Anna Chrysler. Chrysler allowed the lone goal while recording six saves.

Mount Vernon Nazarene had perhaps its best chance to score in the 63rd minute. Morgan Gibson sent a shot from 10 yards out towards the goal, only to have LWC goalkeeper Eveljn Frigotto post one of her five saves on the night with a diving save to her right.

Frigotto posted her third career shutout in the win.

The Cougars ultimately outshot the Blue Raiders 11-10 but trailed in shots on goal (7-5).

Lindsey Wilson turns its attention to the most difficult part of its schedule, playing three of the top five teams in the NAIA over the next three weeks -- No. 1 Spring Arbor, No. 3 Northwestern Ohio and No. 5 Martin Methodist (Tenn.).

The Blue Raiders open the difficult stretch at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 1, as Lindsey Wilson travels to Spring Arbor.
