In an evenly paced first half, both the Blue Raiders and the Phoenix (11-3-1, 4-1) were tied after 45 minutes. The Blue Raiders managed a slight advantage in shots, putting four on goal as they totaled six shots. Cumberland finished the half with five shots, three on goal.
Lindsey Wilson struck first in the 31st minute off a set piece when Cumberland was called for a foul near their end line. Birgerud sent a ball into the 18-yard box that found the head of Alicia Thoresen who slotted one towards the back post for the score.
Cumberland responded, scoring a goal of their own five minutes later. The Phoenix took advantage of their fourth of five corner kicks in the half as Marie Bathe found Danisha Brown who headed one home to level the score.
The Phoenix scored their second straight goal of the contest during the 80th minute to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Again making use of a corner kick, Bathe would again send the ball into the box, this time finding Brena Cernas who took one touch before finishing toward the right post through traffic.
Birgerud and Satoh provided the heroics to close out the game.
Eveljn Frigotto picked up the win in goal, allowing two goals while recording four saves. Michaela Hawthorn allowed all three goals while stopping seven Lindsey Wilson shots.
The Blue Raiders return to action at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 18, as Lindsey Wilson travels to No. 18-ranked Georgia Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
