Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer scored once in each half to beat visiting Cumberland (Tenn.) 2-0 tonight at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
Bruno Henrique and Oscar Dueso each scored in the win, but it was David Coffey who set the tone for the match in the game's opening minute.
Following a giveaway in the final third of the Lindsey Wilson defensive half, Coffey charged off his line and won a one-on-one battle with Cumberland's Tyler Watson to keep the match scoreless. Coffey finished the night with his fourth shutout while stopping six Phoenix shots on goal.
Henrique put the Blue Raiders (9-2, 5-0 in the MSC) in front for good six minutes later with his sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. Henrique floated a ball past Cumberland keeper Nicklas Rulle into the upper right corner off a Renan Ramos corner kick for the lead.
While the Blue Raiders finished the night with a 20-12 shots advantage, it was not their most efficient night of the season. Lindsey Wilson managed to hit the target just six times during the match.
The Watson shot proved to be one of the very few good chances for the Phoenix (7-6, 1-3) had against the Lindsey Wilson backline.
Lindsey Wilson looked to be content with the 1-0 lead until the 76th minute.
A burst of speed from Ramos down the right flank set up the second goal of the night, giving Lindsey Wilson some insurance. With a four-player, four-touch, 10-second burst, Ramos played a cross into the heart of the penalty area from the end line onto a charging Dueso, who one-timed the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead. The goal is Dueso's 11th of the season.
With the win, Lindsey Wilson remains atop the Mid-South Conference standings.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, October 22, as the Blue Raiders travel to Life (Ga.) in Marietta, Georgia.
