Cavelti's late goal pushes Lindsey Wilson past Campbellsville

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team won 1-0 after a late strike in their contest against Campbellsville on Wednesday evening. Steady rain persisted throughout much of the Battle of Highway 55 at Finley Stadium as Sina Cavelti proved to be the difference-maker with her 80th-minute goal.

Amara Safuan played a corner kick that was denied and cleared back out of the penalty area to Safuan on the right sideline. The senior played another ball into the box that deflected off a few players before settling at the feet of Kim DeGroot. DeGroot touched one off to Cavelti who finished into the left corner of the goal. The strike was enough for a Blue Raider victory.

With the win, the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team claims their second straight Mid-South Conference regular-season title and their fourth in the last five years. It marks the 18th time in the program's history LWC has accomplished the feat.

Jovana Ivanovic recorded her second straight start in goal for the Blue Raiders as she tallied three saves.

The wet conditions affected the first half of action as both teams tried their best to settle into the constant drizzle that hovered over Finley Stadium. Much of the action centered around midfield with the Blue Raiders able to generate a few more scoring chances despite the Tigers controlling possession for much of the half. Lindsey Wilson managed six shots to the Tigers three as both teams placed just one shot on goal.

Cavelti paced all players with three shots as one of her attempts was on goal. LWC would produce four corner kicks to Campbellsville's one but failed to capitalize on the opportunities.

Campbellsville controlled most of the possession in their attacking third in the second half but the LWC defense was able to hold the Tigers to very few scoring opportunities. Shots were even at 3-3 until Cavelti's late strike that sealed the win for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson finished the contest with 13 shots on goal as Campbellsville managed 10. Both squads placed three of their attempts on goal.

The Blue Raiders enter the postseason on Nov. 7 for their next contest with the start of the MSC Tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
