Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 5-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated John Brown (Ark.) 4-1 during the 2019 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round at Blue Raider Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Blue Raiders (14-3-1) poured in four goals during the first half as they controlled the pace of play, outshooting the Golden Eagles (17-4-1) 11-5, including 6-0 in shots on goal.
Three different Lindsey Wilson players slotted goals in the half as Bruno Henrique scored first during just the sixth minute. Off a Neville Morgan throw-in, Oscar Dueso headed one on to Henrique who finished the play for the score.
Rainer De Jesus struck off a penalty kick in the 29th minute to double the Blue Raider advantage. Henrique scored his second of the night in the 37th minute off another Dueso assist. The strike came from inside the 18-yard box nearly on the end line.
Dueso picked up his third assist of the contest when Alexander Koziolek pushed the Lindsey Wilson advantage to 4-0 in the 40th minute.
John Brown got on the board in the 57th minute off a Jacob Zamarron goal off a Goncalo Verissimo assist. The comeback bid would fall short as the Blue Raiders hung on to win 4-1.
The Blue Raiders outshot the Golden Eagles 20-18, including 9-6 in shots on goal. LWC goalkeeper David Coffey finished with three saves on the night.
Lindsey Wilson advance to the 2019 NAIA National Championship Second Round at the final site in Irvine, California where they will face UC Merced (Calif.). The match time is still to be determined on Monday, Dec 2 at the OC Great Park Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Raiders are 11-5-0 all-time in the round of 16 as they reach the postseason point of the season for the first time since 2017 and the 17th time in program history.
