Women's Soccer beats Cumberland to punch ticket to MSC Tournament finals

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's soccer continued its offensive eruption today with a 4-2 win over fifth-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals at Jim Ross Field.

The Blue Raiders (14-3-1) advance to the tournament finals next Saturday to face the winner of the other semifinal game, featuring second-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) and third-seeded Thomas More (Ky.).

Lindsey Wilson -- the MSC regular season champions -- struggled at times this season to find the back of the net. The Blue Raiders won four conference games this season by 1-0 scores.

Lindsey Wilson's trip to Bowling Green this week has been anything but a struggle, tallying 10 goals in two games.

MSC Player of the Year Sina Cavelti has half of the 10 goals, including two today.

Cavelti opened the scoring with a nifty turn and shot inside the penalty area in the 24th minute for the 1-0 lead. Thea Birgerud fed Cavelti at the top of the penalty box with a defender on her back. Cavelti trapped the ball and turned and one-timed a shot into the back of the goal for the lead.

Less than six minutes later, Flavia Laich raced onto a pass from Emelie Liljered and centered the ball past Cumberland goalkeeper Michaela Hawthorn for the 2-0 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson looked to take its two-goal lead into the break when Cumberland (12-7-1) stunned the Blue Raiders just ahead of the halftime horn. Marie Bathe hit a long-distance shot that drifted over Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic and into the goal in the 45th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Cavelti and Birgerud once again played a significant role in the second half.

Birgerud pushed Lindsey Wilson in front 3-1 when she blasted a corner kick directly into the goal in the 64th minute. The goal is her fifth of the season and her second of the year directly coming from a corner kick.

Cavelti scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season in the 82nd minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Birgerud -- who finished the game with a goal and two assists -- set up the Cavelti goal for her team-high ninth assist of the season.

Cumberland's Sarah Haddock scored in the 83rd minute to cut the Blue Raider lead to 4-2, but it wasn't enough as Lindsey Wilson advances to its 20th consecutive tournament title game. The Blue Raiders have been in every MSC Tournament final since joining the conference in 2010 -- winning 17 conference tournament championships.

The MSC Tournament final is slated for 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 16, as Jim Ross Field.
