Women's Basketball struggles in 61-59 loss at Pikeville

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson women's basketball struggled offensively, surrendering a double-digit fourth-quarter lead in a 61-59 loss to Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday at the UPIKE Gym.

The Blue Raiders (16-8, 6-4 in the Mid-South Conference) shot just 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field in the game, including missing 10 of their last 11 shots to squander a chance to sweep the season series from the Bears.

J'Nayah Hall scored a driving layup with just under 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 59-59. The field goal was the first for the Blue Raiders since Reagan Turner scored at the 9-minute mark to give Lindsey Wilson a 55-39 lead in the final quarter.

Pikeville's Kayla Mullins scored on a runner from just outside the lane with 2.8 seconds left to give the Bears (17-9, 6-4) the come-from-behind win. Pikeville closed the game's final 8:37 with a 22-4 run.

Lindsey Wilson's last-chance heave from just over halfcourt fell short ending the Blue Raiders' six-game winning streak over the Bears.

Hall led the Blue Raiders with 21 points while Turner chipped in 18 in the setback. During the game, Turner scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 13th Blue Raider in the program's history to achieve the milestone.

Lindsey Wilson led by as many as 14 points in the first quarter and 16 in the final frame. The Bears largest lead of the game was two.

Pikeville trimmed the 16-point deficit to seven midway through the quarter and tied the game at 57-57 with 1:45 left.

The LWC offensive woes trickled into its free throw shooting. The Blue Raiders -- who entered the game shooting 71.6 percent from the free throw line -- missed four of six freebies over the final three minutes. Lindsey Wilson shot just 60 percent (12-of-20) from the charity stripe in the game.

Brianna Burbridge forced one of the Blue Raiders' 11 turnovers in the game and scored an uncontested layup to give the Bears the two-point advantage in the final minute, setting up the final exchange.

Pikeville finished the game shooting 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field. Burbridge led the Bears with 13 points. Mullins and Emily Baker each scored 11 in the win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 9, as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 10-ranked Shawnee State (Ohio) in Portsmouth, Ohio.
