Cavelti, Safuan combines to help Women's Soccer to overtime win over Indiana Wesleyan

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Amara Safuan scored a golden goal in the 98th minute to lift the No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Indiana Wesleyan tonight at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Sina Cavelti set up the game-winner with the pass off the endline deep inside the penalty box that Safuan buried into the right corner of the net for the win. The goal is the sixth game-winning goal of Safuan's career.

The come-from-behind win was made possible thanks in large part to Cavelti's effort at the end of regulation play. Cavelti ran past three Indiana Wesleyan defenders and scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute to ultimately send the game into overtime.

Indiana Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead the 22nd minute on a Brenna Streeter goal. Streeter collected the ball in a crowd at the top of the penalty area and blasted the shot past Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Eveljn Frigotto for the lead. Frigotto finished the night allowing just the one goal while collecting five saves in her nearly 98 minutes in goal.

Indiana Wesleyan's Sam Castaneda nearly matched Frigotto's efforts in goal. The freshman was terrific in her collegiate debut, thwarting a one-on-one attack from Cavelti early in the match and turning away a potential game-tying shot from Alicia Thoresen in the first stanza. Castaneda also finished with five saves in the setback.

Like the goalkeeper's numbers, the match proved to be even in a number of areas. Both teams finished with 16 shots while the Blue Raiders ended with seven shots on target compared to six from the Wildcats (0-1).

In the end, Cavelti's late heroics helped Lindsey Wilson improve to 8-2 all-time against Indiana Wesleyan and 20-2-5 all-time in season openers.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 24, as the Blue Raiders travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
