Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – For the second game in a row, Yudaya Nakayenze scored an overtime winner for the Blue Raiders to remain undefeated in conference play this season. The goal, scored in the 100th minute of play, is the fifth goal scored by Nakayenze this season and second in overtime.
Lindsey Wilson outshot the No. 6-ranked team in the country 13-8 with an 8-6 shot on goal mark. Maya Caon made five saves in the match with Nakayenze and Thoresen both getting on the score sheet.
It wasn't the best of starts to a match from the Blue Raiders (5-2, 4-0 MSC) as it only took the hosts 13 seconds to open the scoring. Right at the kickoff, a combination of Ainhoa Camara and Jillian Zurborg cut through the Blue Raider defense with Zurborg finishing off the offensive move for her second goal of the season for the Patriots (6-3-1, 0-3-1).
With Lindsey Wilson now on the front foot to find an equalizer, got their lucky break just 10 minutes later. On a corner kick, a handball in the box was called against the Patriots allowing Alicia Thoresen to convert the spot kick and tie the game back at 1-1. The goal is the fifth scored this season by Thoresen putting her on pace to tie her best goal-scoring season when she had six back in her debut season of 2018-19.
The second half was just as much of a battle as the first with both teams sharing the possession and doing well on defense. Cumberlands goalkeeper Georgia Martell was forced into four saves in the second half after some good spells of possession from the Blue Raiders, but it wasn't enough to break the deadlock.
It took overtime for the second game in a row to determine the fate of the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team. Late into the overtime period, Nakayenze answered the call once more following up a shot from Thoresen that was saved, tapping it into an empty net to give the Blue Raiders the upset victory and help her side remain undefeated in conference play this season.
Lindsey Wilson concludes their three-game road trip next week with a visit to Thomas More (Ky.) on Wednesday, October 6th. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT.
