Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team used four second-half goals to defeat No. 18 Cumberland (Tenn.) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (10-3, 9-1 MSC) are now 3-2 against top-25 opponents, while Cumberland (11-3-1, 7-2-1 MSC) has lost their second consecutive game.
Both sides struggled early in the first half to net the ball as the first shot of the match wasn't recorded until the 12th minute as Yudaya Nakayenze attempted to put Lindsey Wilson out in front, but her shot was blocked.
The Blue Raiders were presented with more opportunities to take the early lead as shots by Alicia Thoresen and Sasha Hearn in the 14th and 15th minutes were saved by Cumberland goalkeeper Sabrina Graziano to keep the match scoreless.
The Phoenix struck first as Jennifer Segura scored her eighth goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
Lindsey Wilson tried to even the match in the waning moments of the first half as a 39th minute shot by Alina Siegel was blocked and the Blue Raiders went into the halftime break trailing by a goal.
The Blue Raiders scored the equalizer early in the second half as Thoresen and Nakayenze connected with Rayssa Neres Gomes De Souza in the 53rd minute for her 13th goal of the season to even the score 1-1.
Cumberland attempted to retake the lead as a miscue by the Lindsey Wilson defense left an open shot for Segura, but Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Maya Caon was able to get a hand on the shot to force it out of bounds in the 63rd minute. Caon recorded another save after the ensuing corner to keep the match tied.
The Blue Raiders doubled their lead in the 67th minute as De Souza notched her second goal of the match to push the lead 2-1. Around a minute later, Britt Tonis scored her second goal of the season to expand Lindsey Wilson's lead 3-1.
The scoring wasn't finished for Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Nakayenze calmy netted the penalty kick for her 10th goal of the season and the Blue Raiders came away with a 4-1 victory over the Phoenix.
The Blue Raiders wrap up the regular season when they host rival No. 13 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. CT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
