Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 11-ranked and No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team lost to No. 8-ranked and No. 1-seed Marian (Ind.) 0-1 this evening in the final of the NAIA Opening Round Indianapolis Bracket. The Knights now advance to the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Final Site in Orange Beach, Alabama.
The Blue Raiders (13-5, 10-1 MSC), were outshot by the Knights (17-4-1, 6-2-1 Crossroads) 17-7 this evening with an 8-4 shot on goal mark.
It was a balanced opening half for both sides as each team had decent opportunities to find the opening goal. Rayssa Neres De Souza had two good looks in the opening 45 minutes for the Blue Raiders, including one from a set piece that forced a save from the Knights goalkeeper Noelle Rolfsen. Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Maya Caon was issued the first yellow card of the match in the 28th minute after she ran out of her box to clear a loose pass from Marian taking out a Knights forward in the process. The Knights had the best look at opening the scoring in the 35th minute as Gretchen Mallin got her head to a free-kick opportunity only to loop her header just wide of the net. At the break, the score remained 0-0.
Into the second half where the tempo was much faster paced than the first. The Knights broke the deadlock in the 50th minute after Drew Mason finished off a cross in the six-yard box to take the 1-0 lead. A minute later, Emma Lindell was through with a great chance 1v1 with Rolfsen but her low shot rolled wide of the net. A little later the Knights had two more good looks to take a two-goal lead, but Caon stood strong, making the saves to keep her team in the game. The Blue Raiders tried to find an equalizer in the remaining 40 minutes but couldn't generate the offense to keep the season alive.
With this result, the Blue Raiders conclude their 2021 season. They finish with a 13-5 overall record going 10-1 in the Mid-South Conference winning a share of the regular season title.
