Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky - Yudaya Nakayenze headed home the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute to lead the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team past Thomas More (Ky.) 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The result is the Blue Raiders' fourth consecutive victory and first of the season in Columbia.
The in-state rivals were neck-and-neck in the first half, posting three shots each.
Lindsey Wilson nearly broke through in the 26th minute. Britt Tonis received the ball at her left foot deep in the corner, sending in a stellar cross towards the unmarked head of Emma Lindell. However, the junior midfielder missed the point-blank opportunity high over the crossbar.
Fifteen minutes later in the closing stages of the first half, Nakayenze picked up a pass from Alicia Thoresen, redirecting the ball just wide of tucking it into the bottom corner of the goal.
Despite the chances generated by the home side, the Saints held a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal after the first 45 minutes.
The Blue Raiders opened the second frame with another good look from their senior midfielder in Nakayenze, but this shot trickled wide of the goal.
The conference leader in shots per game entering Tuesday's contest totaled a team-high 4 shots, including the ultimate game-winner with less than fifteen minutes to play in regulation.
The game's only goal began in front of the Blue Raiders' bench with Lindell dribbling the ball towards the corner before cutting in towards the end line. After taking a quick look, Lindell delivered a cross into the 8-yard box that was met by the head of Nakayenze and sent past Saints' netminder Taylor Stahl.
It was Nakayenze's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Lindsey Wilson managed to keep the Thomas More offense in check for the remainder of the contest, all the way down to the final whistle.
Eveljn Frigotto recorded her second straight shutout of the season, stopping 3-of-3.
The Blue Raiders will be back at Walter S. Reuling Stadium on March 14 v. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), and March 16 v. Bethel (Tenn.). Both matches are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
