Escobar's Golden-Goal Pushes Women's Soccer past Bethel

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team needed extra time to get past No. 25 Bethel 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Claudia Santillan Escobar proved to be the difference-maker, scoring her goal in the 104th minute. Yudaya Nakayenze broke into the box and laid one-off for Santillan who finished off the left post and into the goal.

It marks Escobar's second overtime winner of the season.

Lindsey Wilson controlled most of the action in the first half racking up eight shots, two on goal while limiting the Wildcats to just three attempts, none of which made their way on target.

The Blue Raiders continued to push the pace in the second half, generating high-quality scoring chances but Bethel's goalkeeper Shanay Ricketts shut the door each time. Lindsey Wilson once again led the shots battle adding five shots on goal and nine total shots. The LWC defense tightened up as they only allowed one Bethel shot during the 45 minute half.

Lindsey Wilson's best chance in the first overtime period came during the 95th minute when Alicia Thoresen got in behind the Bethel defenders. One-on-one with the keeper her shot went right into Ricketts' chest to deny the golden goal opportunity.

Bethel tallied their first shot of the match during the 97th minute but Eveljn Frigotto was sharp, denying the attempt from inside the 18-yard box.

Lindsey Wilson finished with 22 shots for the match and 10 shots on goal.

The Blue Raiders return to the pitch on Sunday when they head to Pulaski, Tenn. to take on No. 5-ranked Martin Methodist at 2 p.m. CT.
