Tonis Serves up the Difference Maker in Women's Soccer Defeat of Cumberland

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. - Britt Tonis hooked in a stunning free kick in the 67th minute to propel the Blue Raiders' women's soccer team past Cumberland (Tenn.) 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

On Senior Day, Lindsey Wilson (8-2, 8-2 MSC) welcomed a physical Phoenix squad that had allowed just one goal all season.

From the opening kick, the visitors showed why they had earned such a reputation, pestering a young Blue Raiders team to the point where Cumberland took as many shots in the first half as they committed fouls.

Despite the action-packed first half, neither side could find the ice breaker, resulting in a scoreless opening 45 minutes.

Lindsey Wilson charged out of the halftime break with their own brand of physical gameplay.

Over the opening twenty minutes of the second frame, the Blue Raiders outshot Cumberland 8-0, garnering four corner kicks in the process.

It was in the latter stages of that timeframe that one of those eight shots met its destination

After earning a free kick off a Cumberland yellow card, Tonis set up shop adjacent to the Lindsey Wilson bench.

On the referee's signal, the junior delivered a fabulous effort towards the box that wound up missing everyone's head and sneaking in the far post for the game's lone goal.

The tally was Tonis' second on the season, and first since March 14 v. Freed-Hardeman.

In total, the Blue Raiders compiled a game-high 13 shots, including six on goal.

Eveljn Frigotto stopped five shots en route to her fifth shutout performance of the season in net, and on a day when she and four other Lindsey Wilson women's soccer seniors were recognized for their outstanding dedication to the program over each of their respective careers.

Tuesday's result marked the end of the Blue Raiders' regular-season, and they will now turn their attention to the upcoming Mid-South Conference tournament, which is set to begin on April 2 in Columbia.
