Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The No. 4- ranked Lindsey Wilson football team (3-0, 3-0 MSC) earned their second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent on Friday afternoon, defeating No. 19 Georgetown 35-14 behind a solid defensive effort.
Despite garnering 505 total yards of offense, the Tigers (2-1, 2-1 MSC) were stifled when it mattered most. Georgetown finished the game going 0-for-6 on fourth down conversion attempts and 8-for-17 on third downs against the Blue Raider defense. Lindsey Wilson also limited the Tigers to just one score in four red zone trips, including an interception that would lead to an eventual score.
Offensively, Cameron Dukes turned in another efficient performance at quarterback for Lindsey Wilson, completing 13-of-21 for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
On the ground, Jaylen Boyd carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards, while Darius Clark produced one touchdown on nine carries for 19 yards, and Dukes chipped in a rushing score of his own, adding to his nine total rushing yards.
Altogether, the Blue Raiders poured in 318 total yards en route to 14 first downs and a perfect 2-for-2 on fourth down attempts.
If you blinked, you may have missed the first quarter as both sides got to work orchestrating productive drives.
After what would have been a 97-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff was called back, the Blue Raider offense banded together to get those points back.
Starting from their own 11-yard line, the visitors garnered some breathing room thanks to back-to-back runs from Boyd and a third from Dukes. The senior quarterback followed up with an impressive 50-yard connection to Cole to break into the Tigers' end of the field.
Five plays later, Dukes took the snap and rolled to his right, finding a wide-open Cole who strutted into the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown reception, the duo's fourth connection of the season.
Georgetown wasted no time generating a response, marching down the field in seven plays and 76 yards to knot the game up at 7-7. Hunter Krause completed four consecutive passes for 76 yards on the Tigers' scoring drive, setting up a one-yard break to the outside by Darius Barbour.
Unphased by the home side's quick answer, the Lindsey Wilson offense returned to the turf and choreographed a scoring drive more imposing than the last.
After falling into a 3rd-and-5 situation, Dukes managed to escape the pressure and fire a 29-yard strike to Cole to move the chains and enter Georgetown territory for the second time on the day. Four straight runs by four different Blue Raiders placed the offense back into the redzone. Despite a 9-yard loss off a sack from Marcus Omosule, Dukes immediately regained that yardage back and put himself in position to convert on a 4th-and-goal touchdown keeper from the 2-yard line.
With a 14-7 scoreline after the first quarter, it was setting up to be a high-scoring affair between two ranked Mid-South rivals. However, following the Blue Raiders' second scoring drive, it was the defenses that showed out in the second frame, leading to a combined six straight scoreless drives.
It was not until the final stages of the first half that either team would be able to relocate the endzone, and in a quarter dominated by the defenses, it was the Lindsey Wilson special teams that cracked through.
Facing a 4th-and-2, the Tigers sent out their punting unit to try and pin the Blue Raiders deep within their own zone, but a fumbled snap by Webb Bates was scooped up by Latrel Streater and run all the way to the house for Blue Raiders' touchdown, giving the road team a 21-7 lead at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, Georgetown was in desperate need of a mark and they moved quickly to position themselves at the Blue Raiders' 6-yard line early in the third. On third down, however, Michael Leslie stepped in front of a pass from Krause at the goal line are galloped half the distance of the field to the 50-yard line to give the ball right back to Lindsey Wilson.
On the ensuing drive, Dukes and Boyd combined for 42 yards of offense, including another fourth-down conversion from Dukes and a big 10-yard run from Boyd to send the visitors into the redzone for the third time on the afternoon.
On first-and-goal, Dukes lobbed a 50-50 ball towards the back corner of the endzone that pulled down by Joshua Lewis for an 8-yard score, ballooning the Blue Raiders' lead to 28-7.
In the fourth quarter, Clark would cap off a five-play 79-yard drive in just two minutes and 12 seconds with a 3-yard rush to the left side.
In spite of a late push by the Tigers in an attempt to crawl back into the contest, the Blue Raiders' defense held their ground, allowing one last score from Tamir Jones before running down the clock.
Georgetown did find themselves steamrolling down the field midway through the final frame, even reaching the redzone, but a sack-fumble by Cameron Thurman resulted in a Lindsey Wilson recovery by Luke Bowman to wipe away any last-minute hopes the Tigers may have had.
Hunter Krause threw for 309 yards for Georgetown, hitting Jake Johnson five times for 102 yards.
The Blue Raiders travel to Cumberland (Tenn.) next Friday for a 6 p.m. CT start.
