GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 13 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team (4-1, 4-1 Mid-South Conference) won a third consecutive road match this season with a 1-0 overtime victory over Georgetown (Ky.) Sunday afternoon.

The match was dominated by the battle between the two goalkeepers as both Megan Martin for Georgetown and Eveljn Frigotto for Lindsey Wilson had big afternoons for their teams. Both goalkeepers got to work early into the game when they had to make a couple of saves to keep the score at 0-0. Around the 32-minute mark, Claudia Santillan Escobar found Yudaya Nakayenze with a through ball into the box to set up a 1v1 battle between the midfielder and the goalkeeper. Martin won the individual battle for the Tigers, pouncing on top of the ball before Nakayenze could make an effort towards goal. Martin made six saves in the first half for the Tigers and helped keep the score at 0-0 into the halftime period.

Lindsey Wilson began the second half where they left off in the first, taking shots at the Tigers goalkeeper and watching them get saved again and again. Into the 51-minute, the Blue Raiders saw their dominance in possession get wiped away from them as a pass was intercepted in the midfield. A shot from Libby Miller in the counterattack beat the scurrying arms of Frigotto and looked destined for the net, but Kim DeGroot hustled back into the play for the Blue Raiders and cleared the ball off the line to keep the game scoreless.

For the remainder of the second half, Lindsey Wilson kept trying to break down the stubborn Georgetown defense, outshooting the Tigers 25-15 with 17 shots on goal to the Tigers eight, but nothing was working. The Blue Raiders were forced into overtime to find a winner, the third time the Blue Raiders have played an overtime period this season.

The Blue Raiders kept their possession into overtime, chipping away at the Georgetown defense. Nakayenze got her head to a great cross from Alicia Thoresen in the first few minutes only to see the same result she saw for the past 90 minutes, a Martin save.

Perseverance paid off for the Blue Raiders in the 99th minute as Thoresen collected a throw-in from the near side and ran towards the box losing her defender. A great low cross towards the center of the box from the Swede found the right foot of the freshman Silvia Marchesi for her first career goal and the winner in overtime.

The Blue Raiders will return home to Walter S. Reuling Stadium for a three-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, March 9 against Thomas More (Ky.) at 3 p.m. CT.
