Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated Briar Cliff (Iowa) 2-0 Thursday evening to advance to the final of the NAIA Spring Arbor opening round bracket.
Silvia Marchesi and Alicia Thoresen led the Blue Raiders on the evening with four shots each as Thoresen had all four of her shots on goal for the Blue Raiders. Kim DeGroot, Britt Tonis, Yudaya Nakayenze, and Marchesi all had at least one shot on goal in the match. Eveljn Frigotto led the game in saves for the Blue Raiders, making six in the match. As a team, the Blue Raiders outshot the Chargers 15-12 with an 8-6 shot on goal mark.
Kim DeGroot opened the scoring for the Blue Raiders in the 10th minute when she headed a delivered ball from Minni Laukka at the corner, flicking it to the far post and in the goal for the 1-0 lead. The goal is the first of the season for the Senior defender and the first of her career. As the half progressed, Frigotto was called into action a few times as Briar Cliff pushed for the equalizer before halftime, but couldn't find it.
The second half was played in the same manner the first had ended, as both teams traded possession and few chances in the half. The Chargers, desperate for an equalizing goal to save their season, sent numbers forward at every opportunity, but couldn't beat a stubborn defense led by Frigotto. The Blue Raiders, waiting for the moment to pounce on the counter-attack, found a few good opportunities for a shot in the box in the second half, but couldn't find a way past Ruby Campa in goal. Campa's outstanding work in the second half was bested by a second goal from the Blue Raiders as Thoresen crossed a low ball into the box after breaking away on the counter, finding a wide-open Marchesi in the box who slotted it into the low corner for the 2-0 victory.
